Hilton Downtown Austin-Posted???
I will be at the Hilton in downtown Austin Monday and Tuesday. Can anyone tell me if it is posted?

Is that the hilton by the Arboretum on Research?
I was there two years ago and did not see a posting, for what little that might be worth.

Re: Hilton Downtown Austin-Posted???
I believe that is the one. It is just off of 35, right smack in the middle of downtown...it has a huge underground parking and is a pretty tall high rise. We were there last year also but I didn't have my CHL then so i didn't bother to look for any postings. I guess i will have to find out. No way I am leaving my handgun in the truck in that parking garage and I sure don't have any intentions of driving from Dallas to Austin unarmed...worse case scenario I could stick it in my luggage before entering the Hotel if it is posted.nitrogen wrote:Is that the hilton by the Arboretum on Research?

Re: Hilton Downtown Austin-Posted???
There was an older discussion which I think involved this same place. IIRC, it's posted with a non-30.06 sign, and Jerry Patterson (Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office) took the issue up with Hilton about their signs. I'm not sure what the current posting situation is there.
Here's the original thread:
http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... =7&t=14847" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I know of at least one Hilton-run hotel in Austin that is posted (Embassy Suites on I35, north of 290 East) that does have a 30.06 sign, though it is craftily hidden to be less of an eyesore (not meeting the visibility requirements in the TPC, IMO). I wrote a thread about it after seeing the sign AFTER a Christmas party as I was leaving. I specifically looked for signs on the way in and did not see any, so that should tell you how visible the sign is. I have some pictures and a more detailed description in the thread linked below:

Re: Hilton Downtown Austin-Posted???
There are two Hilton's in downtown, both within a couple of blocks of one another. The one closest to I-35 is the Hilton - Garden Center, I believe and it is not posted. The one a little farther west (with underground parking) is posted on the East entrance. If you enter via the parking garage you will never see a posting!

You are correct. That seemed a bit odd to me. I was entering through the garage and didn't see the sign until last night when coming in from some high jinx on 6th street. I wasn't armed, due to a serious intoxication problem

So how does this work? The signs aren't posted at all the entrances.

That's not required in the law.03Lightningrocks wrote:So how does this work? The signs aren't posted at all the entrances.

Re: Hilton Downtown Austin-Posted???
There has been a lot of debate on that issue. I think the consensus is that until you see or are made aware of a valid 30.06 sign you have not been notified. Once you are aware or have seen it the location becomes off-limits. If you are outed for some reason and weren't aware it existed, then you will probably have to convince a LEO or judge you were unaware of it due to the way you entered the property. BTW, IIANAL. Re: Hilton Downtown Austin-Posted???
I didn't want to start a new thread all over so I'll just add on to this one and revive it.
As far as the situation with one entrance being properly posted and the others not, I feel I have a GOOD defense to this using the following scenario. In Baytown the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital has two very large, largest I've seen, 30.06 signs that are posted to the left and right of the main entrance. Even for those CHL'rs who can't read they went the extra mile and put a handgun with a red circle and slash through it.
Anyhow, proper signs and all at this entrance. At the other entrances they have a sign that states something to the effect of "It is against state law to carry a handgun on these premises." Not so big and not even close to the right language. Now, here is the where I believe a good defense comes in at. The city of Baytown has a smoking ordinace that requires EVERY public entrance to have a sign posted stating smoking is not permitted within 15 feet of the entrance. I believe there are fines if they are found to be non-compliant. These signs are all the excat same size, shape, color, and wording. They somehow are able to post these signs at EVERY entrance, but somehow fail to post the proper 30.06 sign at every entrance. This to me is a major breakdown on their part and although I know the sign is at the front door, I'm very tempted to another entrance carrying and claim stupidity if I ever get caught. Concealed is concealed and hopefully nothing would ever happen, but I just find it ironic they can post non-smoking signs everywhere, but not 30.06 signs. I know, we've already said its not a qualification for them to post 30.06 signs at each door, but doesn't anyone else see the irony and defense for the CHL holder here in this case?

Re: Hilton Downtown Austin-Posted???
Once again, I would have to say discretion is the better part of valor. I would not carry in that hotel, nor that hospital. I would use a different hotel, and limit my visits to the hospital to relatives, friends and such. I would not carry in there, as their intent is now obvious. For me, there are times when the old saying that it is sometimes better to ask forgiveness than to seek permission just doesn't work. IMHO, of course. Doing an end-around is not always the best option in the playbook. ![tiphat :tiphat:](./images/smilies/tiphat.gif)

Re: Hilton Downtown Austin-Posted???
I might be tempted to do something different. If the door I come through has no posting, then I will walk on in concealed. As far as the other doors being posted...till the day I die I would swear I never saw them....and I would be telling the truth if I don't enter through those doors.
I will make one more comment. In 28 years of carrying concealed...yep 28 years. Think about that one a minute folks. I have never been outed. As they say...CONCEALED IS CONCEALED.

Of course I also would only be using the doors to enter that are not posted properly. Otherwise it would clearly be wrong/illegal, IMHO.03Lightningrocks wrote:If the door I come through has no posting, then I will walk on in concealed.
