Does CHL = Registration?

#1

Post by JayAre »

From time to time I have considered getting my CHL, but I can't seem to get past the idea that if things go badly for the 2nd Amendment, having a CHL is like saying "I HAVE A GUN, COME AND GET MINE FIRST". Is this an irrational fear, or is there some degree of safety in the number of people with a permit?

I got my chl because my wife forced me to, I hate guns and wouldn't ever touch one. She said I wasn't a man unless I got one and I let peer pressure /her hitting me all the time get the better of me.

Welcome to the information age. It is likely that congress could find out what households have firearms with 99% certainty by throwing a billion dollars at a semi-competent information technology company. Heck, i would be surprised if these guys hadn't done a proof of concept on it yet.

I wouldn't worry about it to much.
It can happen here.

The CHL is not linked to some database of guns you own, so as far as the State knows, I have no guns. And yes, I would say there is safety in numbers. Think about the gay marriage issue in California: for a short while they legalized it, then a court suspended further marriages, then a constitutional amendment prohibited it. It's now illegal for new gay marriages, but as far as I know, those few couples who got married during that time it was allowed are still considered married. Now imagine if instead of a few dozen (or hundred, whatever) it was hundreds of thousands. They would probably have the necessary political clout to overturn the laws, again.

Now, you may or may not find that example disagreeable, but I'm not commenting on that issue one way or the other. My point is that it's much easier for government to stop issuing something than it is to take something back. And if they do try to take away CHL forever, it will be much more difficult for them if there are many of us with CHL than if there are only a few.

Others have made the point that the CHL program only registers potential owners not the guns themselves, Credit card companys are a better repository of gun pwnership records.
Few of us who truly believe in the RKBA are happy with all of the provisions of the CHL program. without it we have hardly any right at all to bear arms. Without it we can basically only carry in our cars or our own property. So far the CHL program has been a sterling example that legal gun toters don't cause blood in the streets.
The choice is pretty clear, for some people, We can pay the piper get our CHL and get to carry amlost every where 24/7
We can be afraid and leave our guns at home or locked up in our car.

I think he's creating a hypothetical situation. . . quoting "somebody" talking to the agents at the door. . . explaining why he has a CHL but no guns to turn in. :cheers2:

A CHL doesn't automatically mean that you own a firearm anymore than a Drivers License mandates that you own a car. It might be a pretty good indication and lead to a lot of assuming, but we all know what happens when people assume.

I know a few people that have a CHL but don't own a gun. Most got the CHL with the intent of buying a gun, and then got lazy. So it wouldn't be a great way to do a registration scheme.

Some are more concerned with fingerprinting than 'registration'. Now, I like many others have been fingerprinted by the .gov for other reasons. But if you haven't been in the military or ever arrested, than you may never have been printed. I also know several folks that would never have been printed without the CHL requirement.

When I recieved my last renewal that was not done through the mail, I had to get my thumb scanned at the DPS License office, so most likely, in Texas, they have at least one of your digits.

I've also been printed for working at a bank in college, for customer background checks mandated by accounts with my current employer, and for my driver's license.
