What's Academy's malfunction?

#1

Post by Venus Pax »

While a friend & I were in Houston to get something to eat, we went by Academy b/c I needed a new yoga mat & wanted to look at handguns. I heard from my dad that they run them 20% off, so I wanted to take a look & get there regular prices so I could be prepared when they have a sale.

What did I discover? "We're sorry ma'am. We don't carry pistols at this location."
 Isn't this Houston? Shouldn't Houston locations have pistols? My friend said that it was probably b/c we were in a bad part of town.
(I couldn't help but think that a bad part of town would be where you'd need one the most.)
GRRRR. Next time you want to go to Academy to look at handguns, call first and make sure they carry them.

The NRA & TSRA are a bargain; they're much cheaper than the cold, dead hands experience.

I must be in a better part of town. The two around me carry handguns, but their prices are pretty high that I don't think I'd buy anything from them other than a Bersa Thunder 380.

Academy also doesn't let gun counter personel carry while on the job. Lame.

Wouldn't that make them security guards that are not properly trained?

There was a bit of sarcasm intended....I realize that they are untrained Academy employees, but this would put them in the position of being a security guard due to them working in the capacity of guarding life or property in an Academy uniform.

There are two stores near me. One sells guns. The other one doesn't.

Ammo costs.....

#12

Post by AggieMM »

Not to hijac the thread, but Academy also has an ammo problem. Lat night, I needed a few more rounds of 9mm (WWB) for this weekend's IDPA competition, so I stopped by Academy on the way home, $6.93 (115 FMJ - Q4172). OUCH. For those that don't remember, it used to be $4.86, then $5.86, now $6.93, a $2+ increase since Janurary. So, didn't buy there, and decided to make an extra stop at my local Wally-World, $4.63 for the same box.

I know gas prices are up, lead is heavy to transport, but if that is true, why hasn't Wally-World up'd their prices yet? Oh well, just thought I'd jump on the "What's wrong with Academy" thread.

I just bought 10 boxes of WWB at Academy for $4.63 a box. All you have to do is ask them to price-match Walmart. I had a Walmart receipt in my wallet that showed the same item for $4.63 so they rang it up as such. 10 boxes for $46.30 plus tax.

The Academy in Abilene used to carry a pretty good gun selection, including Glocks and S&W airweight J-frames. Hardly anything anymore, selection is very poor. I think they are catering mostly to hunters these days.

Ammo is always out of stock, unless I want to buy a box that would take me a long time to use up.

I've just started going to a small gun shop there in Abilene, better service and fair prices. Ammo is always in stock.

Hi All,

I had occasion to go to Dallas a couple of weeks ago and stopped in at the Academy by Town East.
They had a pretty good selection of handguns.
While there, I bought a S&W 642 for $358.00 plus tax.
