Wife...also CHL had good question for me as we were driving back from range last night.
Situation (sorry need editor):
She is a CHL Holder and carrying concealed as a front seat passenger. The driver, a girlfriend from work, is pulled over by LEO for improper lane change. All cars stop and LEO requests license, insurance paperwork from driver.
I think a stretch...but my wife feels in that she is concealing...that she would be obliged to hand the LEO her ID and CHL; eventhough the Officer did not ask for her ID directly...i.e. only the driver. Understand her point of wanting to take 'higher standard road'; but don't think necessary unless direct request for ID from LEO. Also, the co-worker may/or does not know my wife is carrying concealed- which may have alot of unecessay discussion from driver/co-worker and then eventually other co-workers

Unless she is asked for ID, the passenger is not required to show any, much less the CHL.

Key words quote: "unecessay discussion".

Is my opinion. No need to give the officer a reason to even ask for wife's ID.

Same as above. hope it was settled before I got here. CHL holder is like any other person in the passenger seat. If he wants your ID he will ask for it.

for me, no ask, no notify.

The officer has enough to worry about without the passenger making things more complicated and confusing by offering ID and CHL.

Just sit still and keep your hands clear is my policy.

Is a passenger in a car even obligated to show ID to an LEO even if asked? They obviously could not have broken the driving laws at the time, and unless there was something in the vehicle that would warrant an arrest (like drugs or something), I don't see how the LEO would even have authority to demand ID.

Also, does an LEO have authority to demand ID of someone who is merely wlking down a sidewalk, if that person has no reasonable relationship to any investigation the officer is doing?

They may or may not have cause to ask for ID, but the law for me as a CHL holder is clear: when asked for ID, present DL and if carrying, CHL (I'll present both anyway, carrying or not). Then I get to leave. I choose the hills I die on and a contest over whether the LEO gets the ID or not isn't one of them....
