CHL is not ID

#1

Post by lrb111 »

In a separate thread I said I thought i saw a faq online that a CHL could be used as ID, the same as any picture ID from the state.

I could not find the faq reference, but anecdotal evidence pro & con. So i emailed the DPS. The Q&A is posted below with the short answer from the legal staff.

Subject: CHL as identification

Just a small question. I saw somewhere that anyone that accepts a Texas
Driver's license or Texas Id for identification puposes, such as check
cashing, must also accept the Texas CHL license as ID.
I thought i read that in a FAQ in one of the Texas online venues, but
cannot find it now. Can you confirm or deny this?

Thank You,

No, a CHL is not an ID for such purposes.

Makes sense.

You have to show ID and your CHL when dealing with LE.

I just have to wonder why anyone would want to use their CHL as ID for such purposes.

Here was the original thread.

Here was an older discussion at the highroad. (thehighroad is down a lot lately) http://tinyurl.com/o7acs

There is no malice inposting this link, even though we know many of the posters.

Several years ago while cashing a check at a drive through bank, I accidentally sent my CHL through the shute instead of my DL. They cashed the check and said, "Have a nice day." I wonder if they thought I was trying to make a statement by doing that or if they thought I'd just made a mistake.

I believe you are referring to HB 362, "Anyone who accepts a driver's license as ID for a particular purpose must also accept a CHL". Filed 1/11/05, it has not passed.

Thats it! I remember reading that on the TCHA (TX Concealed Handgun Assoc. website) for the '05 Leg. Session. Perhaps this issue will be addressed once again in the '07 Session.

I concur. If they allow/encourage CHLs to be used as IDs, they may as well pass an Open Carry law.
