We will be going to Little Rock AFB in a few weeks to visit out son and his wife, they live on base. What do I do about my gun? Can I carry or what?

All military bases have their own rules about firearms, and they vary greatly. LRAFB is a "closed" base, meaning you must go through security to get on base, even if you're just visiting the staff housing area.

The LRAFB web site doesn't offer any clues about firearms, but the USAF tends to be more hopolophobic than the other services. Your best bet is to call the security forces at (501) 987-3221. Don't expect an answer to your question at that number; but, they may be able to direct you to the "Law Enforcement Center", or "Provost Marshal", or whatever the AF equivalent is.

If nothing else, you can always drop your gun(s) off at a nearby gun shop for "cleaning" while you're on base. With a wink, they'll "clean" it for five bucks or so.

I like the gunshop idea. A buddy of mine was told to pawn his and then go get it after the base visit. Of course that required a lot of paperwork, and possible loss of the pistol if there was a paper mix-up.

If all else fails, I have friends in the area, including one who is a DoD civilian employee at LRAFB, who might be able to arrange storage for you. Check with base security first, and if you get an "absolutely no way!" answer, then contact me and I'll see if I can arrange something.

Thanks for all the advice/help. I called our son tonight and he is checking, but, I'm guessing it will be a "no"............

I would n't worry about it... just keep it locked in your trunk unloaded while on base.

It is most unlikely anyone will ever know you have it, and if they do find out for some reason, locked in the trunk unloaded will not cause you any problems.

Now if your son happens to be the Wing King it is even easier....

Very true.... and some commanders are just silent on the issue... a wink is as good as a nod...

The PX/BX sells guns on some installations.

When he was stationed at Elmendorf, Ak., we made a trip to the BX and saw a real nice selection of guns, in fact that is where he bought his AK-47...I think what I am going to do before I get to Base is store it in the "Car Safe" I bought for taking the gun when I fly......

Sorry if i have not been to all mil. bases/post with guns to enter, seems like kb craig knows all the laws on mil. post, also mr craig watch what you type about people on this sight, about what someone knows/don;t know.

I do not claim to know all the laws on military posts, which is why I didn't make a blanket statement about what the regulations are.

I haven't written anything "about people on this sight (sic)", nor about what they know or don't know. I pointed out your statement was incorrect.

This is not a personal insult; don't make it into one. We've all been wrong, and I myself have been corrected on this forum and others.

Definitely call the base. All the bases I was stationed on allowed firearms in base housing but not the dormatories. Anytime I had weapons in the house, I had to notify the Security Police there were weapons in the house. Some require it, some don't. Your best bet is to directly ask the people who would be taking those weapons from you....the base security police.

But it's different for visitors. If you live on base there are rules to allow you to store and have access to your personal firearms. If you are a non-military visitor to a base/post you can't bring it with you. Some have provisions for temporary storage at one of the base armories and may require an escort. Carrying on federal property is prohibited with few exceptions. If you are military and wish to take your gun(s) TDY with you, your orders need to specify that you are allowed.

Very true...I can recall having my firearms listed on my orders........something like "Member is authorized to hand transfer weapons...blah blah." something like that.
