How long is a person eligible for the veteran discount with DPS?
Is the DD-214 all that is needed?
I am asking for my father who was in the Army many years ago. Any info is appreciated.

The only thing I provided as proof was my DD-214. I think any Veteran qualifies provided they have an honorable discharge.

Correct.......
And.....it does not have to even be a certified copy of the DD-214. Any ole copy will do, certified or non certified.

There are 2 'versions' of the DD-214, at least *I* have 2.
One has your discharge type and other information on it, the other lacks this information in the bottom box. I suppose that they did this so that you can have one to give people/employers/etc with less personal info on it, for whatever reason.
Make sure you send them the one WITH the additional information, that specifically states your type of discharge in it. I sent the one without it first, and had to send them the additional information.

Great point. I wouldn't have even thought to look at mine before sending it in had I not seen a thread on here. The one I had in my hand to include did NOT have the box on it that showed my Honorable Discharge. Glad I came here first and made sure the correct one went in.

As far as I know, an honorably discharged veteran is always eligible for the discount. I was Honorably discharged back '97 and got a veteran's discount on my CHL in 2008.

Be aware if your Father is over 60, he is also eligble for the 50% off discount. The discounts cannot be combined.

I don't know how I missed this the last two times, I didn't know there was a Vet discount. Guess I will remember this for the end of the year when I have to renew.

Nope. I'm over 60 and a vet. You get to pick one, not both. Although I wish we could

I was actually separated from the California Air National Guard to the Retired Reserves so I didn't get a "DD-214". Instead I received a NGB Form 22 showing my separation under honorable conditions. I sent a copy of the document in my CHL package and they sent a letter I didn't supply the correct documentation to indicate my military service. I replied with a letter stating this was my official documentation and a copy of my retired ID card. It must have sufficed as they issued my CHL.

Uh-uh -- 50% off of 50% off is 75 % off, not 100% !
