My CHL expires in November of this year. Do I need to contact DPS and request a renewal packet or will they automatically send one to me like their website says they will?

Also, how long does it generally take to get the CHL back after you send in your renewal papers? Should I be taking my renewal class right now or do I still have some time?

One last thing...I just moved to the Austin area. Does anyone have any good renewal instructors that they can recommend?

You should have received a letter from DPS back in May. The are not sending the entire renewal packet, even though the statute requires it. The letter is very easily missed in the junk mail, so I recommend that you just go to the DPS web site and start the renewal process there. That's what the letter invites you to do anyway.

The renewal times are all over the map. My son just got his back in 40 days. I would definitely take the class as soon as you get your packet and send it in early. Be sure to read the "CHL Checklist" here on the forum. It has some excellent information provided by various CHL instructors on TexasCHLforum and the advice given could well save you a delay.

Someone will have a good recomendation for your area. I encourage you to GET BUSY. Especially w/ the change of address. Depending on the expiration date in Nov. You may have just barely 95 days. Some are running 60 and more to get plactic in the mail. Don't have a gap that causes you to be unarmed.

My renewal just took 57 days. It was received in Austin on May 25th and I received my license back on July 20th. That was 8 days after the original had expired on the 12th.

Don't put it off unless you don't carry everyday.

Well, I've already taken care of the address change. I did that online yesterday. I guess I'll go ahead and start the renewal process online and go from there. My CHL expires towards the end of November so I'm looking at about 4 months right now.
