I found this on another forum I frequent. It is an amazing story that reminds us of not only why we carry but that things can get really bad in a hurry, and that self defense with a gun doesn't always end up with the good guy unscathed. This guy is truly lucky. Things could have been a lot worse and I'm sure he counts his blessings despite being injured in the ordeal. I will not even begin to critique his response as I think he did the best he could under the circumstances.

My heart rate escalated just reading that. What a brave and well-prepared dude! If anybody questions the reasons for carrying...there is exhibit A. It also brings up other valid sub-points, such as reinforcing the need to carry with one in the chamber. I can't imagine being in that situation with a BG robbing me and my friends, and having to try to quietly chamber a round without him noticing. I want to KNOW that if I draw my weapon and pull the trigger, a round will be fired.

WOW...He is very lucky....also stated:

".38 Special Snubby. Luckily, he (BAD GUY) was using FMJ. The one in my chest/shoulder took out a major vein but missed the subclavian artery and my lung by a hair. If he'd been using a decent hollow point it would have hit either or both. Docs said I'd have bled out in 15-20 minutes if the artery was hit. It took 15 min just for the ambulance to get there.'

1. The gell test of FMJ and JHP maybe true. The wound channel of FMJ is narrow governed by size of bullet. The JHP ceates enlarged wound channel which is good. It is lucky the bad guy was to cheap to buy JHP.

2. A important point is that at the ranges, we shoot standing with perfect form. This guy was shooting on his back at moving target and distorted body shape( clothing).

WOW is right.. Awesome to be able to read the first hand account of what happened and all 6 pages of answers to the questions he has been asked. Definitely a good post to learn something from. And what a great group of guys on that forum to buy him a replacement of his choice. The pictures of his injuries reconfirm why FMJ is not a good defense round as well.

"Several of my family, friends from back in HS, and most of the guys that were there that night, have gotten their CCW permits in the ensuing months. I've encouraged that, but with the caveat that each person really needs to take it seriously. I try to explain to them that before I started CCW'ing I sat down and made a conscious decision that if the occasion arose that I would use it and I would take another person's life if that's what it came to. For all the blow hard internet commanding that goes on in gun boards these days, I think that it's important to remember that for us good guys, killing another human being is inherently against our nature unless it's an us or them situation."

Practice, practice, practice. This guy wasn't able to get a perfect stance at a stationary target and all other points of posture and shooting fundamentals we fire down the range.

Practice and know your carry weapon.

I type this as much as a reminder to me as to all other fellow-CHL'ers.
God forbid, should something ever go down where one would need to act, not a thing about the encounter will be perfect or textbook.

I agree. I took particular notice at how many shots missed their target at close range. Hand shots, shoulder shots??? Bullets flying every which way and none struck a kill target. Neither bad guy or good guy could put together enough composure to place a good shot. I think this situation is the norm for us untrained individuals. From personal experience I can tell you the adrenalin pumping causes you to go auto pilot and lose the ability to put together two consecutive thoughts.

Its great to hear that the GG is recovering and hopefully he will gain full mobility in his hands. It was alos GREAT to hear that some folks got together and got him a new DW Valor!

This was a real life incident from a CHL holder, who's not a LEO or military, or ex-military. This should be read and re-read. Thanks so much smyrna for posting this!
