Unless we're grilling outside or doing yard work and going in-and-out, I keep my doors locked at home. 50% of crime happens during the day. I've had several friends tell me, "yeah, but I'm sitting right here watching t.v. I'll see them if they come in the front door."
My argument is that I don't want them GETTING through the front door. And if they do, I want it to be obvious to the police that they busted in before I shot them.

Just curious.. do you lock doors?

Every door stays locked unless I'm traversing through it.

Absolutely. All doors are locked 100% of the time.

The front door has a combination keypad on it, as well as the garage door.

Mostly I keep them locked because otherwise i'll forget to lock them when I leave.

1,000%! Front door is deadbolted all the time and the rear sliding door is always pinned. I'm happy to say it's become habit with not only me and my wife, but also our son. I agree about not wanting then getting through the front door. My opinion, because of our lifestyle, is that my family is most likely to encounter danger at home (via invasion, robbery, etc) so we keep the house locked at all times.

Good post. Locked at all times. I want a door between me & a problem. I want the chance to look out the window & see who is wanting in. If they come in uninvited I too want it evident to LE & a Grand Jury if it goes there that it was an invasion, break in, unauthorised entry...

Living in a metro area, yes.

When I was stationed in norther Michigan, the USAF base was larger than the town right outside the base. We didn't even have a lock on our door.

We lock all our doors when we are inside out of habit. No need to make it easy for someone to get in eh ?

Our alarm sytem is zoned so that we can arm the front door/window zones and leave all of the back zones (back patio door, pool house doors, shed doors) unarmed. We'll usually do that when we're spending the day out back on the patio and by the pool.

When Im out of town, Robin will lock up and she'll set the alarm on "occupied" mode whenever she's home-- all entrances /doors/windows armed but no motion sensors.

I try to keep the doors locked, but with an 8 year old it gets tough. We have a great neighbors who try and watch each others homes and childern.
We are a new development and and I am a Officer in the HOA, as we transisition the property from the developer to the HOA, I have become more aware of what actually happens in the neighborhood. Other than minor vandelism of the community pool, the area has been pretty quite.
It's no longer like the days of our parents and grandparents when you could leave the doors unlocked and the windows open.

I live about 3/4 mile off the FM and my doors are unlocked when we are home and are Dead bolted when we leave .

Same here, live "in the country"...so we normally leave the front door unlocked during the day when we're at home (locked at night).

My wife is a "Keep the doors locked nut" Which is a good thing, I tend to forget.

My habit of locking the doors is so ingrained that I have been know to lock the back door after sticking my head out to check on my son while he is playing. He then gets rather annoyed that he is locked out of the house.

Guilty of that too But if you really want to annoy someone, try locking your wife out

When close a door, I lock it. I've finally gotten my wife and son to do a better job of this too. Took much fussin though.
