Looking for opinions since I'm on the fence here. I'm registered for the CHL class at College of the Mainland in Texas City. They provide the Glock, ammo, mags, etc. While this is a nice perk of taking the course here, I'm not sure if I want to use their Glock or take one of my XD9's that I love so much. Having never shot the Glock, I don't want to hit three-pointers in my first round while trying to get accustomed to a different gun. Taking your own gun requires instructor approval. Springfield vs. Glock - should I expect any big surprises?

My primary is a Glock 19 and I had no problem adjusting to shooting a friend's XD9 at the range. I think the reverse would be true too.

Also, the shooting test is super duper easy.

I've never heard of that .

I would take the Springfield . And if for some weird reason the instructor says no then use the Glock.
Aren't Glocks and XD's almost identical anyway ?

No. XD's look good.

Glocks are for shooting yourself in the leg
when you Mexican carry in your sweatpants.

I'm not too concerned, but wanted some feedback on the overall difficulty (or lack thereof) in the shooting proficiency part of the course. I guess my only hangup at this point is being the only one in the group who is reloading while those who have five of the provided mags fully loaded wait on me. If the shooting test is that easy, I may just opt to use the Glock.

Instructor approval required - It's in the course description! Struck me as odd, but I'm not the instructor..... I guess it keeps some folks from showing up with their AR's ????

It is .

The most important part is paying close attention to the instructor the whole time while shooting.
The reason I say that is because it can be difficult to hear him or her with your hearing protection on.

Is the shooting range on campus?

Yes - the range and classroom are in the same building. It's more or less a one stop shop!

One more thing..
Don't rush your shots. Especially on the farthest distance .
There's plenty of time to acquire a good aim.

The range is the most fun part and the easiest part of the day. Don't sweat the "target practice" with a Glock or XD or whatever you use.

10 hours of instruction is a long day. I sat through one for myself in 2007, then sat through one with my wife in June of 2009. Her class was taught by a personal friend of ours. Even for a friend, 10 hours of listening to one person is a long day!

Wow...I didn't even know there was a range there. Is it open to the public do you know?

As for the gun, we own Glocks and an XD and it really isn't going to make that much difference to you I wouldn't think...just line up the sight and pull the bang switch. If you can shoot any handgun at all you will be fine.

The advantage of taking your own weapon would be just one of familiarity. I took my CHL shooting class with a gun provided by the instructor and shot the snot out of the target with it (250 ).

You should be able to pass at just the 3 and 7 yard distances anyway. It is like hitting a barn door standing on the latch :)

The plus side of a Glock is that it won't fail or jam on you, the beauty of the XD is, neither will it!

Understood on the 46.03, however the course descritption indicates that a personal firearm may be used with instructor approval.

Regardless, I sincerely appreciate all of the replies and believe I'll opt to use the provided Glock. I guess it's an opportunity to shoot a Glock without renting at another range.

I took mine at Alvin Community College and you were expected to bring your own gun.
