Well, today I showed my CHL to a LEO for the first time. I was at a business meeting this morning on 6th street in downtown Austin and noticed that my bike was stolen when I came out of the meeting.

Some Austin rangers were parked outside the building as I came out of the building where the meeting was. The the rangers called the Austin PD and two Austin police arrived about ten minutes later to take a report.

They asked for my id ... I showed both my drivers license and my CHL as I was carrying (which I always do wherever it is legal). The officer asked me If I was carrying now. I replied yes. He asked where the gun was located and told me to keep my hands away from it. I told him that it was inside my waistband on the right side. He asked what kind of gun it was ... I replied that it was a Kimber 45 semi-automatic. He smiled, relaxed and became quite friendly as he took down the information about the bike for his report. All in all it was quite a pleasant experience given that I had lost my favorite mode of transportation. The way the Austin police officer handled the CHL part of the encounter was primo. Good job Austin police.

Hello ... BIcycle. A litespeed titanium model ... pretty expensive (about $4000.00). Costs as much as some cars.

Sorry about the bike. Good to know about the local LEO. He might have relaxed when he heard it wasn't a throw away gun.

Check the local Pawn shops, then read Craig's list & Ebay !
No one else will ride that nice of a bike ... it's up for resale !!!

Cost as much as MY car.

Litespeed is a pretty serious and not very common ride. Check the pawnshops, ebay, craigslist, and local bike webboards.

thats why you put some huffy stickers on it or dont park it in public.

In this situation, were you required to show the officer your CHL?

Granted, I understand that this is the best idea, but is it required?

They asked for his ID. Does not matter if he was driving, walking or in his house.
When a magistrate or LEO asks for ID present both.
I teach my students to declare at the time & not wait to be asked.

Sorry about your bike hangfour. You may remember that I posted about someone trying to steal my bike back in August. I was lucky tho.

Hello everyone ... thanks for the comments. My CHL instructor told me that when I was asked for ID when carrying to always show both DL and CHL.

By the way, I was doing a little free consulting for an Austin marketing/software company (I'm retired but like to help start-up companies when I can as part of my public service activities). I got an e-mail yesterday from them that they had deposited some money in an account for me at one of Austin's best bike shops as they were sorry that I had lost my bike. When I went to the bike shop today to look at bikes, I was stunned at how much they had deposited. It was enough to replace the bike. I'm still hopeful that I may find my old bike. But, if not, this whole experience has been a good one for me.

Wow what a great company! That is pretty rare to see in this day and age. Sorry about your bike though, as posted by others, I would definitely try to recover it. Austin is a big city with a lot of people on bikes but yours is definitely not as common. Good luck.
