Completing application without DL Audit number

#1

Post by Justin Franklin »

Looking for suggestions….

I have a student who completed my CHL class and is unable to start the online application because he only has a temporary paper drivers license. Long story short, he recently moved here from another state and just got his drivers license last week. Apparently the temporary paper license does not have an audit number and he's unable to start the online application without it. I'm pretty sure it will take at least two weeks before he gets the actual license in the mail, but he's trying to beat the March 1st deadline for electronic fingerprinting. Any tips on how he can get his audit number?

I'm guessing it won't be assigned until it's printed, but I thought I'd ask anyways just in case someone knows something I do not.

Thank you in advance for any tips provided!

The audit number is a unique identifying number for tracking when and where the DL was issued. It identifies such things as DL office number, camera that took the photo, date of issuance, and sequence number. The number is unique to each person processed.

How about having the student call the DPS and ask for it? It may work, although they may need to explain why they need it.

Good idea. I applied for my CHL on-line with a temporary Texas DL. I don't recall anything about needing an audit number. That was a few years ago so things may have changed.

I think it would be better to call the CHL number at DPS and ask them. Are they open Monday or is it a state holiday too?

Does the temporary license still have a 10-12 character code to the right of the license number, above the issued date?

Best solution we found was to submit the paper application as it does not ask for the DL Audit number.

This will add a few days to the processing time, but DPS didn't have a better solution.
