Wells Fargo incident
I went by Wells Fargo today to cash a check from that bank (I bank elsewhere). To cash the check if you don't have an acct with them they thumbprint the check, and then require two forms of photo ID. All I had was my DL and my CHL so I gave the clerk both, and he took both saying these will work.
All was going smooth. I was a little put out by having to show my CHL, but it was my last resort, and only the clerk saw, and it didnt bother him one bit.
However, as I was leaving, he asked to see it again and I gave it to him and he said he was going to see if his manager thought these are acceptable for future use. Then, w/o asking me, he goes and MAKES A COPY OF MY CHL right there in front of me. I said "uuummm....why did you just make a copy of that?" and he said so he could show his manager. I wasn't comfortable with it, but instead of making a bigger deal while carrying, I just made him sharpie out all the identifying info (pic didnt turn out on b/w copier).
What would y'all have done for future reference?

Having a bank that I don't bank at, having a copy of my name, CHL license number, and address is not any of thier business.
Maybe I'm being up tight, but at least they should have had the courtesy to ask. All in all, I won't be waking up in the middle of the night with cold sweats because they have a semi copy of my chl.

I don't believe they have any reason to need a copy of either my DL or my CHL, and the copy of the CHL goes beyond endangering the privacy of personal information, it borders on revealing to people, that don't need to know, that I carry.
If they want to see what a CHL looks like so that they can decide whether it makes good ID or not, they can go here: http://www.packing.org/state/index.jsp/texas
I don't carry two forms of photo ID with me, beyond my CHL, and I doubt that many do, so I have to wonder about the reasoning behind the requirement.

I agree that making a copy is a bit rediculous, and that it really is none of their business, but you offered up your CHL.gigag04 wrote:Having a bank that I don't bank at, having a copy of my name, CHL license number, and address is not any of thier business.

I think you did the right thing by demanding that they black out your info, but really...would you wake up in a cold sweat if they hadn't?

With the magnetic strip on the back of TDL's, wouldn't they be privy to all that info had they swiped it? Perhaps not your CHL number.

No Problem
I have had several instances where banks have asked for two forms, both in Texas and other states. Never been an issue, even in Kalifornia. Here in Texas they never said anything, cause I am sure it happens a lot. I too would get peeved if they photocopied any ID. I would demand it back. Identity theft, you know.
