Full-time Texas Peace Officers, need to provide a letter from your department head with all the information required under §411.1991, Texas Government Code.

Retired Texas Peace Officers or Federal Peace Officers, need to provide a copy of your retirement credentials and a letter from your retirement agency with all the information required under §411.199, Texas Government Code.

GC §411.1991. ACTIVE PEACE OFFICERS. (a) A person who is licensed
as a peace officer under Chapter 1701, Occupations Code,
and is employed full-time as a peace officer by a law enforcement
agency may apply for a license under this subchapter. The person
shall submit to the department two complete sets of legible and classifiable
fingerprints and a sworn statement of the head of the law enforcement
agency employing the applicant. A head of a law
enforcement agency may not refuse to issue a statement under this
subsection. If the applicant alleges that the statement is untrue, the department
shall investigate the validity of the statement. The statement
must include:
(1) the name and rank of the applicant;
(2) whether the applicant has been accused of misconduct at any
time during the applicant's period of employment with the agency and
the disposition of that accusation;
(3) a description of the physical and mental condition of the applicant;
(4) a list of the types of weapons the applicant has demonstrated
proficiency with during the preceding year; and
(5) a recommendation from the agency head that a license be issued
to the person under this subchapter.
(b) The department may issue a license under this subchapter to an
applicant under this section if the statement from the head of the law
enforcement agency employing the applicant complies with Subsection
(a) and indicates that the applicant is qualified and physically and
mentally fit to carry a handgun.
(c) An applicant under this section shall pay a fee of $25 for a license
issued under this subchapter.
(d) A license issued under this section expires as provided by
Section 411.183.

I looked at this during my last renewal. I found that for the extra $10 it was easier to just send them a copy of my DD-214.

If it is an initial application, and you are not a veteran, the savings is worth the special trip to the chief's office.

I don't understand why any LEO would bother getting a concealed handgun license, when you already can carry nationwide under LEOSA.

With limitations.

And texas penal code gets us almost anywhere.

But a Tcleose commission card for some reason doesn't get you past a bg check call on the 4473. Plus, though my agency is civil service, it is still technically possible to lose ones job.

Lastly, I like to support the program and had a CHL before I had a badge.

To the OP - I printed myself with the help of a jailer buddy on the L1. I wrote up a word
Document in third person from the Chief's point of view and had the Sgt over train-rec (training/recruiting) take it to him to sign after he put it on letter head for me. My letter literally followed the bulletpoints exactly. I have it saved at home and will post an edited version later if you need it.

WOW, lots of help, thanks all. I had looked at the DPS FAQ, which made it look like all I needed was the letter from agency, then somewhere else it read as though I needed to go through the entire application process, but wouldn't have to take the class.

SO as I understand, App, prints, and letter is what I need?

As to why a LEO would want this, for starters, I worked for a place that pretty much said you can only ever carry this gun right here. A "loophole" was to carry as a CHL holder with whatever I wanted, but I would have to have been very careful about taking "police action," as the policy read. Not so much a problem now, as my present employer authorizes "any quality handgun" that I can qualify and demonstrate proficiency with. And, as someone else pointed out, it's possible to lose ones job...sickness, injury, a variety of things can happen where maybe I don't have a badge anymore.

Secondly, it seems to quicken the purchasing process, and individual sellers seem to favor having one.
