I have a criminal record from a stupid mistake I made 11 years ago. It didn't keep me from obtaining my CHL. I would be considered a criminal under the context of this article.

Criminal could be a misdemeanor from 50 years ago, or a traffic citation.

A lot of people will qualify as having a criminal record while having done nothing wrong, a good example would be a young woman who shoots her attempted rapist. This article is designed to scare the general population into thinking that convicted felons are being given permits. There is a VERY significant difference between a criminal record and a convicted felon.

Article typically long on emotion, short of facts. They list the guy arrested for lots of stuff over the years, but never say he was convicted of anything.

The guy with 4 PI arrests and 3 convictions...potentially problematic, but they never say how many years these spanned. 1,2, 40?

I believe it was the Miami-Dade sheriff that tried to prove the folly of CHL in Florida when it first came out. He tallied EVERY violation by CHL's including traffic stops, whether they were carrying or not and cataloged it as a gun violation. Even with this devious tactic it was shown how much more CHL holders were over the average citizen. I wish I still had the citation, I think it was an NRA article 10-12 years ago.

They should but unfortunately the first 4 (Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, & Florida) seem to outweigh the rest of us. So much for Democracy.

From what I have read and heard the Sherrif of Johnson County is not a pro CHL person and was one of the reasons the pro RKBA's wanted a must issue.

Having grown up in rural Iowa, I can see this happening! There are 99 counties in Iowa and each county sheriff decided who, if anyone, in their county received a carry permit. Some sheriff's issued like shall issue, other sheriff's issued no permits. I applied for a carry permit before moving to Texas and was denied because "self defense", by itself, was not a good enough reason to issue a permit.

This sounds like the rantings of an upset sheriff with his power base taken away by the state when Iowa went "shall issue" on January 1, 2011.

The article is the same flavor, as were most news atricles leading up to shall issue, blood in the streets, corner gunfights and shootings over parking spots at the mall.

I made the mistake of reading the comments after the article. I don't remember they person that kept making the same comment, paraphrased, "if the sheriff said it, it must be true." I was about to register and reply to his comment by asking him if or when was the last time he thought for himself, or did he let the government tell him everything he should do. It's probably a good thing we were meeting another couple for supper or I could have got sucked into the anti's hand wringing and self induced panic.

Some media source does this every time a state gets CHL or goes "Shall Issue". It is always proven wrong and the rags that publish it lose even more respect than they have to date. It is like "Wild West" and "Road Rage" baloney!
