KHOU (Houston) piece about CHLs, interview with John Lott

#1

Post by seamusTX »

KHOU television published an article about CHLs today. Other than highlighting one accidental shooting and one CHL holder who has been accused of homicide, they have a short interview with John Lott and a couple of CHL instructors.

The homicide incident was discussed in this forum at the time it happened—http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/met ... 96633.html

This article contains one of my pet peeves, namely, using the phrase "begs the question" as if it meant, "the question must be asked."

The correct usage of "begging the question" can be found on about a million pet-peeve web sites. ;-)

Some of the comments are typically trollish, for those of you who enjoy replying to such idiocy.

That is a horrible piece of journalism! Ignore the facts, accentuate the one rare occurrence that helps drive home your agenda, and don't really answer any questions...just use conjecture and leave the reader wondering about the truth. :banghead:

Now, now - I'm sure the writer graduated from journalism school. Thou shalt not question, they are the Professionals.

Exactly what was the purpose of this story?
I saw it and can't answer that question

Good question.

As the first line of the story says, the legislature recently passed a bill that allows employees to carry weapons in their own motor vehicles in employer-owned parking lots (which we are all aware of).

This story was apparently written in response to that piece of real news.

Nearly everything that you see on television serves one of the following purposes:
  • To get you to buy something or give money to someone
  • To get you to vote for someone
  • To get you to watch more television (so that you do one of the above)
However, once upon a time, TV and radio licensees were supposed to perform a public service in return for using the publicly owned airwaves. To that end, they have news and a few public service announcements. News costs more to produce than it earns from revenue. So the station management puts less money and effort into news than they might, ideally.

I feel for the idealistic people who go into journalism, knowing that they have low pay and no prestige at the entry level, and a very steep, narrow pyramid to climb.
