Debate with misinformed friend...
Hey guys,
I was having a discussion with a co-worker this morning over CHL laws, and to the best of my knowledge he is woefully misinformed on one particular issue. However, as IANAL, I wanted to double-check myself just to make sure I'm not the one who is in the wrong.
He asserts that in Texas, a CHL holder who leaves a vehicle locked in their car must have a lockbox/safe in the car; a glovebox is insufficient. If you are NOT a chl-holder then you can use the glove box, but "CHL holders are held to a higher standard" whenever they leave their pistol in their car.
To me, this seems exceedingly unlikely, but given how the laws are occasionally devoid of common sense......

Nope. Not true. It's a good idea (for both CHL and non-CHL), but there's no such law.

I assume you meant "leaves a gun locked in their car," not "leaves a vehicle locked in their car?" In any case, your friend is wrong.newTexan wrote:Hey guys,

It is remarkable to me how much people who don't have a CHL claim to know about CHL law, when often they've never taken the time to actually read the law. They're just repeating stuff someone else told them.
You can secure your gun inside your vehicle any way you want to, so long as it is not in plain sight. You can just slip it under the seat if you want to. Now, is it wise to not secure your gun in a locked container? No it isn't, but on the other hand, lots of vehicles have a locking glove box or locking center console if you don't want to go buy a lockbox.

Remove those gun range stickers, nra stickers and clean up all of those used shot up targets and they will never suspect there is a gun in there. Nothing is burglar proof. They will just steal your lock box.

Actually, I use those steel boxes with a cable attached to the seat frame, and all of it under the seat out of sight.
Always get the largest size, which will hold a full-size 1911 and spare mags. If I need to lock up my pocket pistol, I put the mags in the glovebox and then both pistols fit the lockbox.
Each vehicle so equipped has the lockbox key attached to the ignition key.

The very best solution is to ask him to cite the law. Refuse to discuss the law with him until he cites the law he wants to discuss. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Variation of that... when these type of things come up, I bring out my Ipad or Iphone, Google the law in question and SHOW the other person what it is I am citing vice what they heard someplace.smoothoperator wrote:The very best solution is to ask him to cite the law. I have little ones, I wrap my m&p 40 compact and one reload in a clean diaper and leave it in the back seat floor board. I figure that if someone breaks into my car they will perceive it as full diaper. Probably be the last thing left in my car.

I installed a lock box in the saddlebag of my motorcycle for when I go somewhere where I cant legally bring my Glock in. Of course I would never pull it out and lock it up at my final destination. Lock it up down the block a ways.

I have stopped getting into those types of conversations or if I find myself in one I get out of it as quick as I can.smoothoperator wrote:The very best solution is to ask him to cite the law. Refuse to discuss the law with him until he cites the law he wants to discuss. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Some people might say that's the right place for a S&W pistol.
Not me. But some people.

This will only hurt a little. What comes next, more so.
