Chas- what are the odds of getting this accomplished this Legislative session? Somewhere between slim and none?
Exactly which states have this provision escapes me at the moment, but wouldn't it be a whole heck of a lot easier to have an endorsement/flag/what have you embedded in a driver's license, for Texas residents? Seems like it would virtually guarantee compliance for "notification". One less piece of plastic to keep track of too....
I would think that non residents could still get issued seperate CHLs...

I'm curious- why?
Because it is nobody's business but mine. I have to give my DL to way too many people, I do not need them seeing anything to do with CHL. Might as well open carry.
Think of all the people you have to show your DL to as you go about your life, knowing it is only increasing each year. Do you really want all of them to know you are carrying a gun?

I can agree with that.
I would think some type of subtle method (prefix, suffix, etc for example) could be implemented where only the people that 'need' to know (Law Enforcement) would be able to tell from a cursory examination.

It could be done very easily with an restriction code. Most people only know one or two of the codes that are common, like the A for glasses. How many of you know what a J or K restriction indicates?
I can see reasons for it, but I don't care that much about it either way. Of course, since I don't have a CHL, it doesn't affect me and I am one of the officers who gives it right back with a thanks.
I'm with Renegade - I want my CHL and DL separate, restriction codes notwithstanding.
Actually the restriction codes are in the Texas Driver's License Handbook, when I was at TSA we got one so we could find out what those codes meant. They are very close to common knowledge even if no one pays attention to them.
A With corrective lenses
B LOFS age 21 or over
C Daytime only
D Not to exceed 45 MPH
E No expressway driving
I M/C not to exceed 250 cc
J Licensed M/C Operator age 21 or over in sight
K Moped
L Vehicle w/o air brakes - applies to vehicles requiring CDL
M CDL Intrastate Commerce only
P Stated on license
Q LOFS 21 or over vehicle above Class B
R LOFS 21 or over vehicle above Class C
S Outside mirror or hearing aid
T Automatic transmission
U Applicable prosthetic devices
V Applicable vehicle devices
W Power steering
So J is a motorcycle learners' permit, and K is for Mopeds.
I tried to get some support for a "restriction" code on the TDL, or make it an option to a separate CHL, several years ago, but the idea never got off the ground. There was no interest in an option because it would mean two systems for getting it printed. There was concern that many people wouldn't want the information contained on their TDL, so that killed the special "restriction" code.
Carry 24-7 or guess right.
