I don't recall being asked for employer info before on the application. What's that about?

You must give 5 yrs of employment history.
Part of your background check comes from County of employment.

Its been there all along. They aren't going to contact the employer (present or past), but they need to know where to search police and court records. For that they need a history of where you've lived and where you've worked.

Employment history was on our original apps, and when my wife didn't put down "unemployed" for those times when she had no employer, they sent the app back for more work, ie writing in "unemployed" for those times.

Hmm...sounds like I may get a letter about that on my renewal application. I've only been unemployed since May, but still didn't really think about putting it down.
