Minor incident with another CHL'er today

A gentleman walks in the store today and I notice the square black case on his right side. His shirt was fully tucked in. As he walks away it's very clear that it is a gun butt openly visible from the rear. A co-worker see's me looking and notices it also. He immediately went and told the owner's daughter who manages the store. She get's very nervous and wants to call the police. I asked her to let me approach the man and work it. I approached him on a side aisle and ask him if he was a peace officer. He said "no sir". I said you do know that open carry is unlawful in this state. He said he has a chl and that a state trooper said his method of carry was okay and that there was no 3006 on the door.

I advised him that from the rear the gun butt was readily visible and easily identifiable as a gun. He then pulled it out and placed it in his back pocket.

Also stated that he had been carrying it in post offices and many other places and no one had noticed before

. I made idle chit chat with him as I checked him out and asked the name of his CHL instructor.
After he left I was able to talk the owners out of putting up the 3006 sign but she said it made her nervous to be around someone with a gun. She also wanted know why I knew so much about the CHL requirements. I told her that my past in doing security/body guard work required it. She also asked if I would tell her if I was carrying. I said don't ask the question unless you really want to know. She then said that if anyone was carrying that she would prefer it to be me. All in all it didn't do us CHlers any favors and raised an issue in my work place that didn't need to be raised. I may still get official 3006 notice in the near future.

Food for though but why do you need to know who his chl instrctor was? Any violation is on the chl holder. He could have been correct about the trooper as what is concealed can be debated. Glad you talked them out of the sign. That was good work.

If necessary, you might try to convince the employer that verbal notification is as effective as a 30.06 sign. They can give verbal notice to idiots like you had to deal with today to keep them out of the shop (as effectively as a sign).

It might be useful to know who the instructor was so that you could communicate to the instructor what his/her student was repeating to others. Then he/she could take care to deal with that in future classes to make sure that his/her students don't act like donkeys in public and blame it on their instructor.

My opinion as to the question of who was his CHL instructor was is that he was trying to get the holder to give a name, if he was slow to give one then maybe he was not legal. If he gave a name then you could possibly engage him in idle talk and educate him a little. There are somepeople that you will never convince to carry the proper way and will ruin it for the ones that want to do it the right way.

I don't think I would be inclined to say anything in that particular circumstance. I also would not have brought it to the attention of the other employee by focusing on it do closely. If its in a holster or other carrying "case", I would have just kept a general eye on him and let it go.
If it was just stuck in his waistband, I would then be more concerned and watched him closely and told the other employee to get ready to call 911.

First of all I didn't even realize the other employee had noticed me watching the CHL til he told me he had seen the gun and had told the employer. My initial plan was to wait til he (CHL) went outside and discreetly approach him especially since he was an occasional customer. I went into damage control mode when the police were mentioned.
My purpose for the instructor question was to see if it was one I knew. It wasn't. He readily answered with a name from a nearby town to the south. In the aftermath of questions I forgot the name but I'm sure I can find it out. It is a real small town. The guy had a couple of other misconceptions that didn't speak well for his CHL knowledge or maybe he was nervous and just talking to much.

We'll get more of this when the CHL requirements get relaxed.

Don't blame this on his instructor. He doesn't.
He claims a trooper told him the rig he had was OK.

State trooper didn't tell him it was not OK to carry in post offices.

That's why you don't take advice from troopers about things they know nothing about more than anyone else.

Then again, the subject of him carrying in a post office may have never come up in conversation with the trooper. From what I read, the trooper had supposedly commented on his carry method, not necessarily the legality of carrying in post offices.....

I don't think the op said anything about what his chl instructor taught him and I didn't see where the trooper said he could carry in the post office.
If someone with a chl has to stare at someone's gun and a trooper said it was ok, maybe the ordinary person wouldn't notice it. Kind of like the clips on my crossbreed holster.
