"With a huge group of students my perception is that the risk that a disgruntled student might bring a gun into the classroom and start shooting at me has been substantially enhanced by the concealed-carry law," he wrote in a letter to the Daily Texan, the school’s student newspaper.
the risk is not any greater with the passage of the bill than before.... if one of his students had wanted to bring a gun in they would have...

He is an idiot. The shooter in Oregon did not need CHL.

This professor teaches Economics. Looks like logic is not a part of that course. :)
The Oregon shootings involved a campus that was gun-free---how did it work out for the professor there who was shot in the head?
There is an over-abundance of under-employed/unemployed PHD folks in the USA. LOTS of them would LOVE to teach at the prestigious University of Texas (the football program notwithstanding). I doubt our beloved University will have any problems filling its teaching ranks in the fall of 2016 with excellent professors.
And here I'll cross-post my answer on the other thread:

Hamermesh retired in August 2014, but continued on as the Sue Killam Professor Emeritus, teaching every Fall through 2017. The professor says the law, which will allow students to carry concealed weapons on designated areas of campus, will make it much more difficult for UT to attract employees.
So what does this actually mean?
It simply means a RETIRED professor who holds an honorary title of "Professor Emeritus" resigns said title. It does NOT mean that UT lost a teacher who was long in the saddle. He was out in a year or so anyway. My guess is that this opportunity down under came at a convenient time for him to accept it and he used Campus Carry to make a statement explaining why he was cutting short his promise to teach for a couple years into his retirement.
It means absolutely nothing short of being a politically motivated stunt that can feed the journalist a sensational story.

Thanks for the clarification - so what you're saying is that this "professor's" decision doesn't affect UT one iota.

He is covering up the humiliating circumstance that he had the UT kicker in his class, could have made him academically ineligible and blew it.
Much better to denounce guns and flee to Australia than face that shame.

It is unfortunate that someone with a higher education is reacting this way. We all know once the Campus bill passes and the university is no longer a gun free zone it will not turn into a shooting gallery. The same forces which leads to deranged people committing these actions has nothing to do with the legality of carry. If anything there will be more protection for the individual student on campus. also remember students under 21 will not qualify for a LTC.

Concealed carry has been legal in the state of Texas for a long time now. 20 years almost?
I presume this guy does not feel unsafe walking down the street surrounded by Texans who carry concealed as he has chosen to live in Texas.
Why does the dynamic change the moment he steps foot on a college campus?
I have yet to meet a liberal who does not allow emotion to overpower logic. I applaud this guy for leaving the University and I hope he will see the flaw in his logic and leave Texas as well.

Sir Robert Muldoon, Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1975-1984, once famously said that New Zealanders moving to Australia “raised the IQ of both countries”.
I have to say that a similar thing about this. Every liberal hoplophobe who runs out of Texas to a gun-control haven raises the IQ (plus the testosterone level) of both.

SCC put out this video:
And this statement:
The UT Professor Who Says He's Resigning over Campus Carry Is a False Martyr
AUSTIN, TX - The media is downright giddy to report that a University of Texas professor plans to resign over the state's new "campus carry" law; however, none of that reporting has yet to ask how this professor so quickly lined up a new job at the University of Sydney in Australia or why a professor who teaches only first-semester freshmen is concerned about a law affecting licensed individuals over the age of 21.
Economics professor emeritus Daniel Hamermesh officially retired in 2014, but for the past two years he has continued teaching one class each fall semester. He says he had planned to keep teaching this class for the next two falls, until the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 11, which allows concealed handgun license holders to carry handguns on the campuses of Texas colleges. In his resignation letter to UT-Austin President Gregory Fenves, Hamermesh writes, “With a huge group of students, my perception is that the risk that a disgruntled student might bring a gun into the classroom and start shooting at me has been substantially enhanced by the concealed-carry law.”
Speaking to the unusual size (as many as 500 students) of Hamermesh's annual class, his letter notes, "In some semesters these groups of 18-year-olds constituted the largest single course on campus." This prompted Antonia Okafor, Southwest director for Students for Concealed Carry, to ask, "Why is Professor Hamermesh worried that allowing CHL holders to carry guns on campus will increase his chances of being shot by students who are too young to obtain a CHL?"
Given that Professor Hamermesh tendered his resignation only two semesters earlier than planned and now intends to take a job at an elite university halfway around the world, his decision to publicly blame a law that would not have impacted his classes reeks of political opportunism. Opponents of campus carry needed a martyr, and they found one in a professor who was on his way out anyway.
ABOUT STUDENTS FOR CONCEALED CARRY — Students for Concealed Carry (SCC) is a national, non-partisan, grassroots organization comprising college students, faculty, staff, and concerned citizens who believe that holders of state-issued concealed handgun licenses should be allowed the same measure of personal protection on college campuses that current laws afford them virtually everywhere else. SCC is not affiliated with the NRA or any other organization. For more information on SCC, visit ConcealedCampus.org or Facebook.com/ConcealedCampus. Having read his comments, he doesn't have the critical thinking skills to be instructing our fine youth. I remember having some heated discussions in college classes but introductory Econ wasn't one of them. LOL

Since when did criminals bother to break the law LEGALLY?
What I find interesting is that when a drunk driver kills people, the politicians blame the driver. When a person kills people with a gun, politicians blame the gun.
It is a good thing I have a good relationship with my guns. I don't worry that they will turn on me behind my back.
