Will OC Backlash Result in more 30.06 Signs ???

#1

Post by bigolbigun2 »

Just wondering what all of you thought about the idea that OC will result in an awakening of sorts and subsequently more businesses deciding to post 30.06 signage as well? Thanks in advance for your replies, theories, and input. Have a great 2016.

On another forum there has been some discussion on this very topic. As businesses come to grips with the new open carry law many may well decide to ban both open and concealed carry. We also agree that once those signs go up they are not likely to come down. It may be that in achieving the right to open carry we may well have jeopardized our right to carry at all. Time will tell.

Or after a while, more angry people call in complaining about the signs and the signs are no more up.

If people persist in flaunting our new found freedoms and/or challenging the intelligence, intent or legality of the businesses' rights and latter day postings, you can count on it.

Let this sleeping dog lie. In time, OC won't be a big deal because the "new" will have worn off and very few will be seen in OC mode and everyone will be merrily going about their business as before.

Maybe you'll come to find that like all the other states where OC is legal it's a nice option for specific situations but in practice almost never happens once the novelty wears off. The media will get bored and move on to something else and by spring everyone will wonder what all the hubbub was about.

I'd sure hate to see you guys wind up with lots of posted places as a result but I doubt there will be significant issues.

Up here in Ohio, OC is completely legal but in 15 years of being into firearms I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen non-law enforcement folks actually OCing while going about their daily business i.e. not purposely making a political statement.

Yes, anyone who has been involved in the CC movement long enough, remembers we battled this early on with merchants. A COMBINATION of folks contacting establishments and presenting their concerns (in a reasonable manner) as well as a good track record being established....resulted in signs coming down fairly quickly. Merchants do not want those big 'honking' signs (especially two of them now) in their store fronts and entrances.

Yes, there will be ground that will need to be gained back, but we weathered it once, we will need to do so again, but it will be to a lesser degree.

The problem is born of OUR failure to adequately educate the public and businesses about OC and what it IS and ISN'T prior to it becoming law.

I have had a Chl since the 1st class was offered in our area, 2-digit number on it, there were very many signs then, slowly they started to go away as stated earlier from calls, letters and possible loss of revenue in some cases. it all settled down quietly.
This will also in time but a CHL/OC weapon is a defensive weapon, so (all will surely not agree here) when you see SA revolvers in western rigs they are for show, I have one also. These are not what I would call a defensive weapon these days, I do love my SA Colt 5.5". The group with the carbines etc I totally support the cause but that results in bad PR. In my years in LE and military I learned to stay un-noticed as much as you could and things sure went easier as it would now with OC, it is great the law was passed and very grateful it was but mistakes will be made of both sides we to have the least if any, pushing an issue like the Luby's post is not good (I was in Luby's the day on the shooting near Ft Hood and remember it well), pushing LE on this will only result in negative things. So much for all that, Texas and our laws, governor and people are great and glad to have found this forum.

Appears it already as generated a significant increase in 30.06 in addition to the expected 30.07 signs. I've seen a number of previously unposted sites getting both signs in DFW.

That's a good point, but I still don't want start being a law breaker. My overall opinion is its going to take awhile for people to get used to a freedom being restored. It doesn't happen very often and people don't know how to act.

"That's a good point, but I still don't want start being a law breaker."

I totally get that, but it's the same as driving over the speed limit so I didn't wrestle with the morality of it too much.

I don't blame anyone for not wanting to intentionally break the law, nor do I particularly LIKE giving my money to places that post the sign but now and then I can't avoid it.

I hope that over time it settles back down like you say. I'm sure it will, this happened in '95 too; signs everywhere then 6 months later they started to come down.

If a business goes from no posting to both, I'm thinking that their intent may have been to ban OC only, and they were "pressured" or given inaccurate advice.

That's my sentiment as well unless it involves my employer or customer sites. I'm also going to live by the assumption that no posting becoming .06/.07 right around the new year means .07 only.
