Welcome to the forum. I have checked this forum and others with similar conclusions. Be honest and most importantly do not have gaps of unaccounted time. Unemployed or student is apparently acceptable reasons. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure what they check it against but I would be as accurate as possible. You may be able to call your previous employers to get them to look up your records. If you just make up a date, and the state calls your previous employers and they give them different dates, it might look a little weird.
Some other options might be to get one of those free credit reports, or look at old W-2 statements or tax returns.

You can do it online. Much faster. I would just try and get as close to possible on the dates. I was in the military from 06-12 and had 3 deployments to Iraq. I also moved quite a bit when I was here, so I couldn't remember 100% the month and day for all my addresses, but I just tried to get as close as possible and had no issues.

When I completed my application, I didn't put exact dates related to my past "criminal" history or employment history. For example, I had a few alcohol related offenses when I was a minor and I couldn't remember all the exact dates so I put a general time frame (such as, "summer 2004" or "August 2002"). For employment history I would put "July or August 2003", etc. In fact, I didn't put one single exact date on my application. My application was accepted and I never had to answer follow-up questions or anything like that.
Your experience may vary and just because it worked for me, it may not work for you. But that was my experience. Good luck.
