Hello all.

I'm looking to hold a 9mm M&P Shield under the steering wheel on my 2013 Ford Explorer.

There appears to be a few options available although I'm really looking for your personal experience please.

Wouldn't recommend it. Has been debated on here before, with the result that it is NOT concealed. Any handgun in the vehicle must be in a shoulder or belt holster if it is NOT concealed (covered under LTC). MPA only covers a concealed handgun in the vehicle.

EDIT : Maybe you envision something that is truly concealed? I don't think you could reach it from a driving position if it were truly concealed under the dash tho... perhaps someone here has experience otherwise.

I made a mount out of a bent angle brace. I drilled holes and bolted it into a metal part under the dash, then bent it so the holster is not visible. I then mounted a Safariland QLS on to it, so I can mount any holster with a QLS fork attached to it under there. I use an ALS holster, so all I have to do is grab it and hit the thumb tab and out it comes. Much easier than trying to get to my CCW gun under my shirt and a seat belt. whole thing is concealed, and the holster is a belt holster... I then keep a safariland UBL belt loop with the other end of the QLS on it, so pull it from under the dash, and I can add it to a belt loop, drop leg... anything else that I want.

Fobus makes a hard holster that mounts in a variety of positions and can be attached under a desk, etc. In each of our cars we have one mounted on the driver's side of the console so that the gun is more or less where our right knee would be while seated. We cover the gun with a small towel which is as close to the color of the interior as we can get. Totally concealed, very accessible.

That's an interesting point: Is it that One's legal ability to conceal a firearm in your car as an ' extension of your home ' Trumps my CHL and legal Open carry?

My understanding is, you can conceal it in the glove box or console or in a holster on your belt. It cannot be seen, or it's illegal. Under the steering column might be seen from some angles and considered not concealed.
I have a comfortable holster, so I keep it on my belt when driving.

Just make sure the gun can't be seen from outside the vehicle. If it is, it'll be illegally carried,

Here is an idea. If you mount it under the steering column. You could then get some velcro and attach a cloth or even a curved piece of kydex sheet over the gun and holster. It would really take no time to pull that off and grab the gun.
