Noticed a couple of Garland-area teachers on-line...anyone know off top of their head if GISD runs the dogs past teachers' vehicles for firearms? Would like to continue to exercise my rights as a CHL holder, but not at the expense of a job. (We all have to make tradeoffs unfortunately.) While I understand the law concerning concealed carry on school premises, I also know GISD expressly prohibits weapons on school grounds, which pretty much makes firearms in vehicles a firing offense.

They can't make it stick if they try to fire you for it. School districts are a de facto municipality. Also, effective sept 1 the general prohibition against guns on school premises will be replaced with a new law that defines prohibited behaviors rather than possesion.

If you look at the intranet when you get on campus, you can find the employee handbook. Last year's employee handbook says no carrying on the premises or any place students practice, such as band practice in the parking lot. I will definitely read this agian when school starts to make sure there are no changes. The way I interpret this and from reading this forum, teacher parking lots are not premises and unless the band practices there, you can carry. I would suggest a lockbox of some sort for your vehicle.

Sprinkle some Bullseye around the superintendent's car and find out.

My wife teaches at a garland ISD school.

She has yet to note any dog searches, although for her own reasons, she does not (yet) have a CHL or carry a gun in her car.

My first thought was pretty much along the same lines . . .

Where was the thread we had where the dogs that do the "searches" were doing so under the pretences of searching for "drugs"...And that "some" of those same dogs are trained to "hit" on explosives and other scents that ping on guns...

This is certainly going to be a big test anyway you look at it...And I bet a dollar to a donut hole that the effort to intimidate employees in these "big" districts is going to be ramped up this next school year...

I would certainly stress that anyone who works for, or has dealings that takes them to schools, that they get a supplementary securing device inside your vehicle to further demonstrate your intent to prevent "easy" access to any firearm you use for lawful purposes during your time other than at these schools or other restricted facilities where you park your vehicle...

Of course they can. Being a municipality does not change their right to terminate.

I think this is a reference to H.B. 2112:

SECTION 1. Section 37.125(a), Education Code, is amended to read as follows:
(a) A person commits an offense if, in a manner intended to cause alarm or personal injury to another person or to damage school property, the person intentionally exhibits, uses, or threatens to exhibit or use a firearm:
(1) in or on any property, including a parking lot, parking garage, or other parking area, that is owned by a private or public school; or
(2) on a school bus being used to transport children to or from school-sponsored activities of a private or public school.

This bill does not change much if anything. It has been illegal to display a firearm in a manner calculated to alarm (disorderly conduct), or to possess a firearm on a school bus.

It could be used against someone who threatens to use a firearm, even if they don't possess one.

The bill I think you are looking for is HB 1815. It reads;
SECTION 1.  Section 46.02, Penal Code, is amended by amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsections (a-1) and (a-2) to read as follows:
(a)  A person commits an offense if the person [he] intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his or her person a handgun, illegal knife, or club if the person is not:
(1)  on the person's own premises or premises under the person's control; or
(2)  inside of or directly en route to a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person's control.
(a-1)  A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his or her person a handgun in a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person's control at any time in which:
(1)  the handgun is in plain view; or
(2)  the person is:
(A)  engaged in criminal activity, other than a Class C misdemeanor that is a violation of a law or ordinance regulating traffic;
(B)  prohibited by law from possessing a firearm; or
(C)  a member of a criminal street gang, as defined by Section 71.01.
(a-2)  For purposes of this section, "premises" includes real property and a recreational vehicle that is being used as living quarters, regardless of whether that use is temporary or permanent. In this subsection, "recreational vehicle" means a motor vehicle primarily designed as temporary living quarters or a vehicle that contains temporary living quarters and is designed to be towed by a motor vehicle. The term includes a travel trailer, camping trailer, truck camper, motor home, and horse trailer with living quarters.

Thats an idea, walk around the lot sprinkling powder on tires and the ground. Dogs will go nuts and be useless.
