Gun Storage near Foot Hood?

My sister's husband is currently in Iraq, While he has been over there she has been staying here in west Texas. Now they have been approved for on base housing and in two weeks I will be taking the last of her things to her. I don't want to make this trip unarmed and I am not going to even think about going on base with a weapon (I'm a civilian).
So is there some place I can store my weapon in Copperas Cove or Killeen, preferably in Cove.

One of the standard methods is to check with any area gun shop, and drop your gun off for "cleaning" (
) for $10 or so.
It's over 20 years since I was at Hood, so I can't tell you of any shops in the area.

Contact the Provost Marshall on the base.

If you can't find a gun shop or pawn shop, lots of both, to hold your weapon(s) for a reasonable fee, I live about 20 miles from cove on 2657. Depends on how your route takes you, you might be driving right by me. It would be no big deal for me to secure your weapon(s) for you, and would be happy to assist a fellow CHLer.
I always hated being disarmed while I was working at Hood.
Good luck.

I would do the same for you. I live in Killeen, within walking distance from Fort Hood's main gate. If you would like me to hold your weapon for you, no charge, I wouldn't mind helping out.
Also, yes, check with the area gun shops.. Guns Galore is a good bet, right here on South Fort Hood Street [across from Miracle Paint & Body on the left side of the road coming from Fort Hood direction.]
Contact me if I can do anything for you.
[Edit: Yes, the PMO [Provost Marshal] is a good idea to contact. The MP station is on the corner of 58th Street and Tank Battalion.. or you can reach the office at 254-287-3700.]

I had a friend that went the pawnshop route. They had him fill out paperwork and ran another background check.

Eh! Yeah, I guess it would work just "loaning" your gun to the pawn shop, and then picking it up in a few days. I haven't done that in so long. Is the sale price back to you for the same amount that they gave you?
Too much paperwork, too much hassle. Still remains an option, though.

Pawnshops are required to do that. Gunsmiths aren't.

Sorry for you guys living around Ft Hood! I was stationed there and hated the surrounding area (just the crappy town not the geographical area). The PMO won't really be of any help. I would just drop it off to one of our members, or get it "cleaned".
