School carry - not the same old thread

The law says no school carry unless you have permission.

Does anyone know, or even heard of, any one giving or getting permission to carry at school. I'll even settle for carry with limitations, i.e. after school.

The law allows the possibility but really, what board or administrator would ever sign off on it? Right or wrong, I wouldn't either in their position, too much liability...I think but IANAL.

So the State writes it in, for some reason, knowing (maybe) that no district would ever allow it. Just seems to be a waste of ink. A mirage of a dangling carrot that can never be obtained. Or am I missing something? Did the lawmakers invision a stituation where an administration would grant carry permission? If so, what is it? Is there a loophole short of a shooter on campus? Is there a hole card that we haven't found.

Faculty and staff at big ISDs may be out of luck but someone at a smaller rural school or private school may have slightly better odds of convincing the powers.

BTW, I asked my Super for permission to carry if I came up on weekends or nights. He would not give me written permission.

Fantastic question! I have been struggling with the "don't ask and you won't get in even more trouble" quandary. I'd even like to know about those who've even asked for permission from a school system.

I worked way to long in the admin side of HISD.

I would bet this was added so the very upper levels of management could get permission form their boards. I suspect the only people that could ask, and actually get permission, are those already close enough or in, "The glass Ceiling" to known the answer before they ask.

You might ask indirectly.....

I think the first problem is finding someone that actually has the authority to give this permission. If the school board has not created a policy delegating this to certain individuals then it could be a problem. Let’s say a principal gives you this permission and then later you are involved in a situation that requires you to display or use your handgun. A higher level of management could state that the principal does not have this authority and therefore you are now in violation of the law.

My other thoughts are this is a mute point. I believe pigs will fly over East Texas dropping 100 dollar bills before any large school district gives permission for an individual to carry a handgun on a school campus.

I don't have any first hand experience with this issue, but I've been told it's in the Code to allow rifle teams to have guns in indoor ranges. The example I was given was the ROTC rifle team.

TSRA or NRA supporters may have put such a clause in for the event of a rash of school shootings or terrorist threats, which could come in the form of the 9/11 types or the stalker-boyfriend of a student types.

I can see situations that may cause upper administration to give teachers or principals special permission, but I don't see them doing this simply because we ask.
It's sad, considering that so many violent attacks happen without prior warning.

I asked my superintendent, who is pro-gun, and he said whatever I wanted to do was fine but he would not give written permission. So you know where that leaves me. I do have it in my truck, just a few short steps from my classroom.

I was hoping of even a rumor of someone getting the blessing.

Photoman has a point....hope it never happens. In fact I am going to my sons school to speak with the headmaster on the issue of security. My son goes to a private school. Sad thing is there is no security presence. They school is locked and you have to have a badge to enter. Yet I never see a parent with a badge and getting in is easy.

I too am at a private school. Security is if I happen to see them...and I am about as far away from everything as you can get. In my building we lock all but one set of doors and I encourage fellow teachers to keep their doors closed and locked. Other than that, I have one other fellow teacher that is like minded in another building. But......I'm making converts.
