Decided to try my hand at hog trapping.
This is me with my homemade trap I placed it in the Trinity river bottoms in Irving on Friday May 7th.
Went to check the trap on Sunday, May 9th 4:20 PM, I've got the trap door locked open so they get used to feeding inside the trap. If you look closely there are two reds inside the trap, one white one in the entrance facing out and one red outside off to the right. I'll set the trip wire on Wednesday after I get off work as my days off are Thursday and Friday. They should be off to Kubey's Thursday morning.

Kubey's is a wild game processor in Dallas. They also have a German butcher shop/grocery store/restaurant in Snyder Plaza by SMU.

Checked my trap Saturday and had these two little guys stop by. They weigh forty to fifty pounds each.

Good work on the hogs.
I use kubys for my game meat. Jalapeno Smoked Sausage is the best IMO.

SC1903A3, what do you use to dispatch them with? I assume that there are issues of discharging a firearm within Irving city limits, and all that?

Same as when I archery hunt. heart lung from the side takes about 45 seconds. You will need a second person to keep his attention. If you don't he'll face you head on and you'll never get the shot. I also have a treestand and feeder for regular archery.
Got this guy on May 22nd. Weighed approximately 175. Adding him to the two little ones filled my freezer So I'm done for now.

I've quit for the summer between the heat, ticks and chiggers but I'll start up again in October when things start cooling off. Do you bow hunt or are you just into trapping?

Is that considered humane? Not saying it's not, just asking.SC1903A3 wrote:... heart lung from the side takes about 45 seconds...

Re: Decided to try my hand at hog trapping.
A bow shot to the heart/lungs is a VERY humane way to dispatch an animal. I have shot deer and seen them shot on hunting shows where the deer initially "spooks" then looks around trying to figure out what the sound was. They will sometimes resume feeding because they are not aware that they have been shot. Approximately 30-45 seconds later, the animal gets dizzy and passes out due to blood loss.duns wrote:Is that considered humane? The only method that could be more humane would be a bullet to the brain at point blank range, which is the normal way to dispatch hogs in a trap. As has been pointed out, this isn't an option for OP since he is in the city limits.
