He died of stupidity. He shot the deer. Why didn't he just shoot it again? Why did he feel like he needed to get in close and use a knife to dispatch it? Just shoot it again. Stupidity is often painful and sometimes fatal. That's as it should be.

I considering myself a (currently non practicing for financial reasons) hunter. I have no problem with the shooting the deer part. But if you wound an animal, you have an ethical responsibility to dispatch it as quickly as possible. Sacrifice the trophy, and put a round in its head. Quicker for the deer, and less dangerous to the hunter. You owe the deer that much.

...agreed...saw a video the other day where an LEO picked up a doe that was standing in the middle of the road for awhile, carried it over to the side, and sat it down...ain't no way I'd ever do that...it'd be like being attacked by a steam-powered meat tenderizer...but the doe didn't attack...

I was thinking the exact thing. So far this season, we have harvested three deer. Only one was an instant kill. Not that we are bad shots but being off by a mere inch can be a big difference. Of the other two my son dispatched both with shots from his sidearm. There is no reason to go and try and play Rambo with a knife. If you really need a trophy get a better taxidermist!

You don't even have to make a head shot to finish off a deer, just shoot another heart/lung shot. It will die quickly.

Back in my hunting days, I knocked down a goose over an alfalfa field and then proceeded to run it down. Rather than shoot it again, I decided to ring it's neck, kinda' like you'd do a quail or a dove or even a pheasant. Wild geese, even wounded ones, don't like having their necks rung.

As TAM said above, the game and the fowl deserve a fitting and immediate coup de grâce.

Haha!!! I watched a friend of mine do the same thing years ago. He left his gun in the blind to run faster and when he tackled the goose it turned and bit him in the chest several times. I never heard a grown man scream so loud and scramble away from a bird in fear. Wild animals have a different opinion about man. There are no rules to survival. They fight to their last dying breath.

Huh... I didn't realize geese could bite a man's chest. Fingers, hands, feet, and toes, sure, but I didn't know their beaks were big enough for them to go all t-rex on someone.

Why let the animal suffer? Just put the animal down, its better for them and safer for you.
