Good Sized Hog

#1

Post by Lynyrd »

Got this one yesterday on my property. He has been tearing up roads and wallowing in my creek crossings. He weighed 267 on my Cabela's scale with some good sized cutters. Glad to have him gone.

Nice! What did you take it with?

But... I thought nobody needed assault rifles.

And they say it can't be done. Good shooting and a real monster. I would hate to have him chasing me.

Heck of a hog... Those cutters will pull nicely in a euro mount!

Shot placement is critical.

I had no clue you could take a hog like that with 5.56! Where did you shoot and how many shots? Just curious. Nice kill BTW!

Granted, the .556 is undersized for something this big. They are tough to bring down if your shot placement is even a bit off. I've shot hogs this size with a .270 and had them run off. They have a very small kill zone low in the chest. But, that being said, I have learned that a well placed .556 just behind the ear in the center of the neck drops them in their tracks. I've probably killed 25 this size that way. If that sounds like a lot, I kill about 50 hogs a year on my little piece of East Texas. Some in traps, and some by feeders. And even then I have way, way too many of them still running around.

This particular hog took two shots. The first one was a bit far back, almost to the shoulder. He staggered, and the second shot brought him down about two seconds later.
Do what you say you're gonna do.

Lynyrd,

What did you do with him?

Eat, bury as is, or ...?

Thanks!

P.S. I've killed em with a .17 cal. fmj to the noggin. DRT!

Congrats on getting rid of a small part of a very large problem. Nice porker, gotta love that meat.
Question for you, is your scale accurate ? My wife used to raise pigs (her gig, I just supplied the muscle)
and that boy looks a little closer to 350 +/-. Enjoy the meat !
