Re: self defense - California trip
this is only my 2nd time visiting California - first time was 4.5 years ago and i will try to avoid it but i don't think i have a 'choice' on this one this time around. i guess i'll have to adjust as much as i can and try to have a good time with in laws.
alot of great suggestions from everyone.

Little better off. Will drive and understand can have my G43 locked in a Pelican case in car but will at least have it in motel.
Anyone know if ok for ammo in same locked case?

Cane... I have two. One a nice solid handmade wood one that I can really put some inertia behind it. I train to use it like a baton or staff. I also have an airline friendly metal fold up cane that has a rubber band running down the center of it. I can carry it folded and drop it like a gravity knife and it snaps into one piece. Its light but surprisingly sturdy. I can put a hurt on my heavy bag quick. Of course it helps that I look the profile old and slow and to be honest my plantar faciaities is why i got the canes.

Re: self defense - California trip
I’m in California right now. I brought a cane, and a good sturdy knife. When I drive here, I bring a gun, because I have some control over my situation, and because I’m spending some time in the free states on the way to and from. But when I fly to California, I don’t bother with a gun. It’s too much trouble, and I have no faith in airline/airport employees at that end. If I were flying inside of Texas, or from Texas to say Arizona, I’d fly with a firearm .... just not to California. Unfortunately, this trip required flying because we’re traveling with two toddlers, who’d never make it to California alive, in a car.

Illinois man, 81, uses antique walking stick to beat thieves
Dan Donovan used his shillelagh to smash the suspect's windshield

Not bad. He whacked one guy in the head, and when they fled he beat out their car windows!
