be cautious traveling to Juarez

I was born and raised in El Paso; when I was a kid, the family would drive over for cheap cokes and groceries (60's); when a teenager we would go across to drink and party with friends (70's). As a younger man, many of us had propane conversions & tanks on our PU trucks for fuel because you could get it in Juarez cheap; fill up a 100 gallon tank for $30 and drive all month (80's-90's).

I left the area for work reasons; moved to DFW, then Corpus, then San Antonio, now Seguin. I tell people the only way I would cross the border now is if I was tied up in the back of someone's trunk... (but true!)

Hey fellow El Pasoan... born and raised. Northeast over by WBAMC. Went to Irvin until we moved to the westside and had to go to Coronado. Exactly what you said. I remember the whole family and grand parents going over to Mercado and having a steak dinner for 20ish bucks for all 6 of us. Great food. Also had friends that lived over there. Got all of my grandparents medications over there. 10 bucks for 3 months of nitroglycerin tabs vs 120 bucks a month in US. Flip the box over and it said made in Chicago...

Left in 94 mom and sister still live there. El Paso is relatively safe. I would not go over to Juarez for anything now.

Hola! What a coincidence; I grew up in NE off of Hondo Pass and graduated Irvin in '73...left the area in '95. Was actually living in Clint area by the time we moved...great little community. Still have a few friends/relatives in the area, but many, like us, have moved. I haven't been back in at least 20 years, but my wife goes to visit every few years or so. Most of the people I care about like to come here to visit which suits me perfectly!!

Once upon a time myself and another Deputy did a prisoner transport and pickup in El Paso. We had to drop off one guy at the TDCJ facility in El Paso, and pick up another guy at the El Paso County Jail to take back to Sweetwater for trial. Before doing the pickup, we had lunch at Applebee's on I-10 in El Paso. As we walked up to the entrance, I noticed "pock marks" all over the outside of the building that were obviously made by high speed projectiles.

We sat down for lunch and when the waitress took our drink orders, I ask her about the pock marks on the building. In a very nonchalant manner she said, "Oh, those are from the bullets flying across the border from Juarez"

Fast forward to two years ago when we were staying overnight in El Paso on the way to Arizona. The Holiday Inn Express we were staying at had a beautiful view of the border fence and Ciudad Juarez. Later that night after supper I was walking the dog in the parking lot and across the border it sounded like popcorn popping.

I am not going to Juarez.

A wall will do nothing to stop the flow of illegals. They will either go over or under it. Eyes on the ground is the only meathod which has stopped the flow in the 50+ years that I have witnessed it.

I think Alpplebees was feeding you a line of hog wash. Every time ( very few ) rounds land in the US side it is major new ( last time even made Fox News). I don’t think Applebee’s would pass on the free advertising. I have seen ( tracers) and heard a fire fight more to the entirior of Juarez. Also, Just last week I heard automatic fire come from a house ( about 50 yards off the river and I am working about 100 yards off the river). 30 min. Later an ambulance arrived and took a sheet covered body.

10 years ago, when things were better in Mexico, I went to Del Rio in search of the scenes from the movie No Country for Old Men, which I thought was a great film.

Not seeing anything familiar, I went into a video store, they still had them back then, figuring the owner or clerk would be familiar with the movie and where it was filmed in Del Rio.

The very nice Hispanic lady, said no, she didn’t think it was filmed in Del Rio. But cautioned me. Don’t go into Mexico. It’s not safe. She then described all the bad experiences she had had, including police shaking her and her friends down, etc. I figured if a Spanish speaking Hispanic woman was telling me this, what would befall a Lilly white city slicker.

No country for old men takes place in delRio and Alpine but was filmed in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Sorry no Mexico for me, even safe places like Cancun.

This was about 20 years ago that we ate at that Applebee's, and a line of hog wash like you mentioned from a restaurant chain would not surprise me at all.
