My understanding is that after a very long lived, and well liked Pope such as JPII the tendency is to elect a Pope that is expected to be a short timer. It's hard for a Pope to follow someone like JPII. But I believe Pope Benedict has done extremely well. And I'm not even Catholic.
I would differ- he's vocal and active in supporting the Progressive agenda.

Climate Change:

This is an apologetics article, but does acknowledge the fact that he stepped farther forward in aligning with the man-made global warming philosophy.

Death Penalty (most recent):

Gun Control (bear in mind the Vatican's stances during WWII, and the lack of substantive renunciation thereof):

You'll notice I said Benedict there... The current Pope, that I'm not a fan of is Francis.

Edit: I clicked on the first link and saw Francis... I read the article after I sent this.

the Death Penalty issue I expect a Pope to be on the side of conserving life. Same for the gun issue.
I don't like Francis' very activist stance and don't like that he buts into a lot of the current political frays with his input.

He would do well to remember

I split the 2013 thread from the 2020 comments. There was too much confusion about which Pope was being discussed.

Thank you for making the change. I should have done it myself.

I was very honored to witness John Paul II say mass at St. Peter’s.

A great leader and father to all people of the world.

https://www.breitbart.com/faith/2022/07 ... dei-group/

Pope Francis has demoted the leader of the conservative group Opus Dei from Bishop to Priest.

Maybe he just saw the movie DaVinci code on Netflix and believed it.

The Breitbart article was less than enthusiastic.

“In 1982, Saint John Paul II established Opus Dei as the Catholic Church’s first personal prelature under the leadership of its own bishop with his apostolic constitution Ut Sit, giving it a juridical configuration “suited to its specific characteristics.” “

Here is the zinger!

“Francis has transferred the oversight of Opus Dei from the Congregation of Bishops to the Dicastery for the Clergy in a move widely interpreted as a backhanded slap to the group, which has traditionally focused on the sanctification and salvation of souls rather than contemporary concerns close to Francis’s heart such as climate change, immigration, anti-free market capitalism, and multilateralism.”

Pope fires Bishop for being too Catholic.
