Arguably the most controversial police chief in Houston's history is leaving Florida and returning to the Great State of Texas. Art Acevedo taking new $271,000 Austin City Hall position overseeing police

Art Acevedo, who has served as a police chief in Austin, Houston and Miami, is taking a newly created, $271,000-a-year administrative job at Austin City Hall overseeing policing, city officials confirmed to the American-Statesman.
Acevedo – both a celebrated and polarizing figure – will serve as an interim assistant city manager and act as a liaison between the Austin Police Department and interim City Manager Jesús Garza. He will provide guidance to the department as it works through issues such as staffing, community-driven reforms and possibly returning to the negotiating table with the police union after years without a labor agreement.
Garza hand-picked Acevedo with no community input or public process, which he said is consistent with how he has built his executive team. The position requires no approval by the City Council, which was informed of his hiring Friday afternoon.
Or is this the minimum salary to live in Austin due to all the CA's moving there.

I hope this guy gets sued to the max and his failure and lies as well as others get exposed. I have kept the information I got from a former HPD detective right after it occurred close to the vest. I hope it gets exposed during the lawsuit. According to the information I received the impetus for these murders is both mind boggling and sad.

Yep. I'd like to think we had something to do with noise on the 'net about it, but we didn't.
After Backlash, Art Acevedo Refuses Job
Council was not happy about decision to hire the former APD chief
https://www.austinchronicle.com/daily/n ... fuses-job/
Well that didn’t last long.
After news broke Friday afternoon that former Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo was returning to City Hall to take on a new executive job created for him by Interim City Manager Jesús Garza, Acevedo tweeted Tuesday, Jan. 23, that he would not accept the position.
The announcement marks the conclusion of a whirlwind four-day period during which City Council members pushed back aggressively against Garza’s decision to hire Acevedo, who in 2016 left Austin in disgrace as news was breaking that the Austin Police Department failed survivors of sexual assault in a myriad ways under his leadership. In 2021, Acevedo was forced out of his job as Houston’s chief of police in the aftermath of a botched drug raid.

Houston City Council approves an additional $1.7 million to defend Art Acevedo and the City in the Fed Lawsuit filed by family of two murdered by Houston Police during botched raid. $2.9 million approved so far. What are they spending the money on? Delaying the trial?

Re: Nobody but Art Acevedo
Amidst the bizarre water charges fiasco in the city, yesterday KPRC (I think) came out with a report that said they'd uncovered more than $1.3 million that had gone out in water bills over the last few years that were, in fact, for vacant lots that had nothing on them, and whose water meters had nothing connected to them in back of the city's feed. Maybe that's how Houston is helping to fund the Defend Art Acevedo Project.

Re: Nobody but Art Acevedo
If you ever watched the video that someone connected to the family's lawsuit did you will know why Acevedo did what he did. The exterior bullet holes show it became a shooting gallery. I was flabbergasted viewing it. I can't find it right now but I'm going to keep searching. It was saved on a laptop that went on the fritz.philip964 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 10:32 pm https://www.click2houston.com/news/loca ... adly-raid/

This is not the complete video the forensic investigator did, but it has some detail of his theories. It's part of a story KPRC did. If I remember correctly in the full version video he showed evidence Tuttle was even shot while laying on the kitchen floor from a window.

Art back in the news in Houston.
Harding raid trial. Tells Officer at scene to turn off body camera.
“I question Chief Acevedo’s motives for telling an officer to turn off his body cam shortly after such a significant incident. With his history of refusing to wear a body cam himself, I find it highly suspicious why he took such action. What purpose did that serve? Certainly doesn’t look very transparent,” said the law enforcement source.
I think we all expected no less from Art. At a minimum Art's career should have been over long ago. Sad that evil/incompetent people keep putting Art in leadership roles.“Former Chief Acevedo should have to answer to the jury and to all of Houston as to why he ordered body camera recording to be turned off in the wake of the botched raid,” said Angela Weltin.
Casey Gonzalez adds, “It is not uncommon for officers who are on extended scenes to turn off their body cam footage as long as they are not having interactions with civilians or witnesses. However, I find it incredibly concerning that officers were being instructed to turn off their body camera footage in the aftermath of such a tragic event when the investigation was clearly still ongoing and unfolding.”
“This new revelation supports the notion that HPD - at the highest level - suspected something was suspicious with this raid. This flies in the face of the narrative they repeated for months after the shooting occurred,” said Joe Vinas.
“I’ve watched longer body worn camera videos for a four-minute aggravated robbery. Body worn cameras run as long as witnesses (here, including officers) are being questioned about the events. If HPD was still in the throes of chaos, turning off those cameras seems inconsistent with policy & common practice, inappropriate, and potentially self-serving,” said Erin Epley.

“Bryant was then asked by attorney Manning if any of the narcotics team had on bodycam video during the raid, Bryant said no but the narcotics team sergeant did have an independent body camera video.
Judge Nelson dismissed the jurors to discuss the discovery.“
Perry Mason moment at the trial today. Not sure if any of this hurts or helps the defendant. But certainly doesn’t help the City of Houston’s civil case.
