Nacogdoches: 5-year-old shoots 6-year--old

#1

Post by seamusTX »

On Friday afternoon, a 5-year-old shot a 6-year-old in the leg at a residence in Nacogdoches County on CR 727....

In Friday's shooting, an aunt was looking after the 5- and 6-year-old children, as well as a 3-year-old, when they found a shotgun, according to Thomas Kerss, Nacogdoches County sheriff.

"The facts we have obtained so far indicate the aunt had moved the shotgun from a secured location while she was dusting and cleaning," Kerss said. "We were told the shotgun was unloaded and the two boys managed to find a shotgun shell and load it while the aunt was in another room."

The sheriff's office received an emergency call around 1:30 p.m., and the injured boy was taken to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital, according to Kerss. He was later flown by helicopter to a children's hospital in Dallas.

"It is still too early to say if there are going to be any type of charges on not securing the weapon or anything like that," Kerss said....

This is getting out of hand.

Texas 2005 ages 0-19

Unintentional Injury #
Motor Vehicle 659
Drowning 110
Fire/Burn 41
Poisoning 67
Suffocation/Strangulation 80
Firearm 13

A child is more likely to die from a car crash or a swimming pool than a gun accident. A gun accident is very easy to prevent. It also make for a much more interest news story than "child dies in car wreck".

Rare events are news, especially in a small town. A vehicle crash has to be pretty spectacular to be news, but every aircraft incident, even a rough landing, is national news.

Also, all shootings are investigated as crimes and become part of the public record. Other accidental deaths may not be investigated by the police.

Most "accidents" are preventable. Many of them would be prevented simply by better supervision. I don't know how many times I've read about a kid drowning because two adults each thought the other was watching the kid.

You can go further by adding in homicide and suicide by firearms, and a "child" 19 or younger was 2.5 times more likely to die in a car accident than by a firearm, even if the firearm was used intentionally. Just using the accidental death rate, a "child" is over 50 times more likely to be killed in a car accident than by a firearm accident. We need to remember these numbers.
Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
