Motorcycle Theft - Just want to vent
This has nothing to do with Texas or CHL (hence posting in off-topic), but I just want to vent a little bit about the low life, pond scum sucking, bottom feeding Arkansans who decided that they deserved my younger son's motorcycle more than he did last night. I freely admit that I'm a proud dad (and I'm proud of all my kids) but this fine 23 year old young man has never purposely wronged anyone, worked very hard and is just starting to reap the benefits of years of putting his shoulder to the the wheel. And last night somebody came along, cut through the security gate of his Little Rock apartment complex and made off with his property. Nobody got hurt and he has insurance coverage for theft, but he and his young wife still feel violated at their home.
I hope that the thieves get everything they have coming to them and believe that sooner or later they will. I also hope that my son and daughter-in-law are able to find peace and feel safe in their home again soon.

Re: Motorcycle Theft - Just want to vent
As a motorcycle lover, and as an american, I hate to hear that. There has been a lot of motorcycle thefts in our area, even when I go to the store I'm always doubtful it will be there when I return. It's sad when things have come to this.

Re: Motorcycle Theft - Just want to vent
Some years ago, I bought my son a Redline (brand) bicycle. It was all red and yellow. It cost me all
of my discretionary spending for that month. After about the second weekend, while we were at an
aunt's house, it was taken. It had been locked with cable to a home-made engine lift (A-frame) inside
of a locked garage. When we came home, it was gone. The cable was gone. The lock was gone.
But I want to talk about feelings. These events totally change the way one feels about loss due to theft.
Before this happened, I was cognizant that theft was wrong. After this happened, it was personal.
According to a psychologist, I was suppose to work my way through disbelief, anger, grief and
reconciliation. (Since less than 40 years have passed, I have not had time to work past anger).
Your son would probably appreciate any words of consolation that you can offer.

I can see you working through all of that! You made it through disbelief and right now you're on anger, right? so if you were to ever find the punk that did it you would feel grief for what you would do to him then reconciliation when it was over

I encourage my buddies to keep their bikes in a garage, or behind a house. If you live in an apartment...pray alot. Maybe get an alarm?
Sorry it happened. So common...guys will roll through with a rented Uhaul or Ryder and snatch like 15 bikes.

What happens to all these stolen bikes?
Are they just parted out, or are they somehow
able to retitle them with VIN's from totalled bikes
of a similar brand?
Maybe your son can get some motion-activated
spotlights for his place?

Or LoJack. You're allowed to use deadly force in pursuit of stolen property, right?
I always chained my bikes when I had them (one chain through each wheel), and I still worried at night.

Update for those interested:
Little Rock PD made a report. The officer basically told him if they did find it, it would be in pieces or wrecked depending on whether it was stolen by a ring dealing in parts or some bad boys looking to joy ride and he really didn't want them to find it.
Insurance told him if the cops didn't find it after 21 days they would declare it a loss and pay him book value less deductible.
The apartment complex "head of security" is an Arkansas State Trooper who actually lives in the apartment below my son's and they have made friends. He was on duty on the highways of Arkansas that evening so he wasn't even on the property.
My son has resigned himself that the bike is gone. He says he's bummed but he'll get over it.
On the good news side of things the house he put a contract on so he can take Pres. Obama up on his $8K deal appraised and passed inspection and they close on the 28th (he was already pre-approved for the loan), so he won't be in an apartment too much longer. Within less than a year this young man has gotten his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (in 4 years), gotten a good job, bought a nice car, married his college sweetheart, had his motorcycle stolen and now is buying his first house. I guess 5 out of 6 positive ain't all bad - and I'm proud of him. I've told him to try to put things in perspective, that on the whole he's had an up first year out of college but rarely is everything always up. And, he's got a whole lot more for which to be thankful than many people these days.
