Door To Door Meat Salesmen

Just moments ago, these these two guys come by knocking on my front door and wanting to know if I want to buy some steaks. I live in a small town with a population just a little over 300 people. I am always on the defensive and a tad bit skeptical when someone I don't know arrives at my home knocking on the door. These same guys have been in the neighborhood before, several months ago, but I don't think they stopped at my residence at that time because I just so happened to be out in the yard at the time open carrying, which I sometimes do when I am on my own property. I have always been one to buy my meat at the grocery store and would never entertain the idea of buying off of one of these trucks that randomly cruise the hood trying to make a sale. I was really surprised that they even stopped at my house. I would have thought that they might remember the last time they were in the area. Obviously they didn't, or are just awfully brave. I reccognized the young lad that was at the door as being the same one I saw last time. He even mentioned that the last time they were in this town that my neighbor had bought some items from them, which I remember eyewitnessing as I went about my business in my own yard. I greeted him at the door with handgun in hand, hiding it behind the door. He never knew it, but nonetheless I was prepared as I always am when some uninvited person comes around. I'm sure others here on the forum have encountered meat sales people in the past. Do you folks ever buy from them? Just curious.

Lots of results. Generally its a ripoff. Paid $$$$, got $$ worth of meat.

They should have a permit. Ask to see it. if not, call Police and report them.

I had a man in my Church a few years back who could not find a job and went to work for one of these meat companies.

He was told his sales pitch would be ... "Mrs. Smith (he had to use one of your neighbors name) ordered some ribeyes (or whatever) and she is not home. I can make you a super deal on them since she is not home."

One time he brought me some NY Strips he had. They were very small and very tuff. I personally do not like the ideal of eating steak that has rode around in a truck all day.

I don't understand the "brave" part. What part of selling meat to a gun owner requires bravery? Did he have some reason to fear that he would be shot for making a sales pitch?

Just an FYI, Colorado Choice (one of the largest meat companies in the country) started out selling their product this way. I know because I worked for them in Dallas and made decent money (but long hours) at it. Schwans still does this and has been for 60 years. Drivers typically have several routes and when they leave the warehouse will usually bring along a few extra cases of their product. When in a neighborhood where I was making deliveries, I'd also drop off flyers and, if anyone was home, would talk to people and show them the product. And sometimes times they'd buy a sample or variety pack just to try things out.

With all that said, if the vehicle didn't have company information on it, then it probably wasn't legitimate.

Oh, and no, I wouldn't buy from a legitimate distributor like this any longer.... But only because I have no way of knowing if it's kosher or not.

These guys in a truck pulled up one day. I came out to meet them. They were parked between my house and my pasture which had 5 cows standing in it and lookin at us. One guy asked if I wanted to buy any meat. Told him I had some fresh, still on the hoof. We both chuckled. He looked a little shady, messy hair, unkept shirt and pants, needed a shave. Never talked prices or quality but probably would have passed anyway. I might buy meat from a truck. Omahasteaks truck? Schwans has meat. Their prices are pretty high though.

A couple of years ago there was a pickup truck driving in our neighborhood selling meat. I don't remember the name of the company. I searched the internet and they were based out of Houston. They had a big chest filled with dry ice in the bed of the truck.

Most of the time I wouldn't even talk to these people, but I guess I was in a generous mood that day. One of the guys stated that all of their products were "natural" beef with no hormones, antibiotics, or additives. After they left, I did an internet search and found their company website revealed that their sales spiel wasn't true. Some of their products were injected with phosphates, sugar, tenderizer and natural and artificial flavors.

I've bought a fresh clam cocktail from a street vendor in Ensenada.....but I wouldn't buy meat off of a truck cruising through my neighborhood. I've had those guys come to my door two or three times. I just politely decline. But, I don't answer my door with a gun in my hand, hidden or not, unless I have to, and there is a good reason to be ready for a fight. I have a gun handy, either on my person or on the table by the door, but not drawn and in hand. To each his own, but I think that's a level of paranoia I don't want to live with.......and yes, I do maintain Condition Yellow. I just don't think that every person who comes to my door is a reason to go to Condition Orange, even if they don't have my sartorial standards. I have the ability to observe people approaching my front door. If I don't like what I see, I just don't answer the door. But for the most part, those door to door people are just trying to make a living, and they are no threat to me. They're annoying, but then I've been there and done that too when I was younger, selling magazines door to door. I meant nobody any harm, and I was grateful for the occasional kindness shown me, even if people didn't want to buy my magazines.

Now what really frosts my butt is those guys who walk through my flower beds to hang a piece of unwanted junk mail on my front door, and walk though my other flowerbed on the way out, refusing to take back their piece of paper from me. I'd shoot one of them in a heartbeat.

Assuming they can read English, perhaps make a sign that says, "Warning: Cow Manure" and place it on the sides of the flower garden where the spammers would walk?

Had one of those guys walk into my garage when I was in there working on the car. Fellow just... wouldn't... leave! I finally picked up a large wrench and told him he had several choices in the manner in which he'd be leaving, but he was only going to like one of them.

Haven't seen them in a while, but we used to get fairly regular visits from sellers representing "Direct USA Delicious Foods." Neighbors reported their product wasn't very good and was pricey.

They come by a few times a year. I'm usually outside so they catch me there, but I don't think they have ever knocked on the door. No way in hell I would buy any thing from them.
