Best Area to Buy Land in TX

I hope this hasn't been covered anywhere, I did my best to spend a few minutes searching for related threads.

My family is considering buying some land 10+ acres within 2 hours +\- of the DFW area. Somewhere we can have a small functional home built, where we have a source of drinking water - well or otherwise, and preferably where I can build out a small range for myself and my family to use.

Anyone have any suggestions of areas or specific counties to consider? I'm not familiar with firearm laws in the various rural counties around here and also know water can be hit or miss.

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated!

East of Dallas.
Kaufman or Henderson County would be a good place to start.

Not 2-3 hrs. from DFW.....but the Hill Country is the best place in Texas

Based on personal experience and what I've read on here stay out of Collin County if you want a range. Up here in Fannin county we are pretty much unrestricted except that most places are on a "public" water system of some sort. I've heard that it's real tough to get a permit to put in a well. Many wells have had to be filled in.

Thanks, as I've been searching I've noticed a lot of places that I wouldn't have thought to have water do, usually co-op or something. I'd still prefer to have a well for backup but with co-op water I'd be happy.

Back-up wells might be a no-no. In La Grange our subdivision is on city water and we cannot put in a well.

The Hill Country is beautiful, but I had gotten the impression it was now a large park for the liberal-progressives who infest Austin. I'm sure I'm exaggerating it some, but I still get that feeling.
