Re: Best MRE?
Oh the days of the c rats and the "John Wayne" or the Clint Eastwood" as my Sr Drill Instructor called them cause "John Wayne is dead!" Lol I remember the heat tabs that you had to put salt on otherwise it was almost as potent as CS, then you could smear your peanut butter on them to make it burn longer.
Or how about a can of peaches with your coffee creamer added for peaches and cream.
Chocolate cake, add a little water to your hot chocolate mix for the icing.
Everybody in the fire team puts their main dish in a steel pot heat it with several heat tabs and have a feast!
I was in when the transformation to MRE's took place and we hated the darn things!

Re: Best MRE?
Looks like this is a cheaper route to go. You need to add the heater option which is $8 a case, but that is less than what I paid. I ordered mine in September - case says they were manufactured Aug 3, 2012.bronco78 wrote:The MRE's being sold though shelf reliance appear to come from "MRE STAR"
http://www.mre-meals.net/products.php?c ... +MRE+Meals" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Which sells them for $69 a case, and free shipping if you buy two cases.
MRE STAR claim to be a DOD supplier, but it's not a name I recognize in eating the things for a very long time.. So who knows, different packaging for those sold under contract to the MIL? Or they may sell to DOD, but for FEMA, or some other use…

Re: Best MRE?
What we found is the case manufacture date is the date it was packaged as a case, not the date the meal components were manufactured and packaged as itemsjmra wrote:I ordered mine in September - case says they were manufactured Aug 3, 2012.

And regardless of date on the case, the listed items on that site, are not current issue.... so old menus? or old packaged component items? or ?????
And your right of course, the $69 was just the meals, but I figured the drop down item for heaters was right there on the same page for those that wanted them.. Free shipping at two cases was another cost saving deal if so inclined.
One case is only 4 days RATS for a single person, or 6 days if rationed at 2 meals per day…..(still 2800~3000 CAL per day, more than enough unless you are really being physical)

We are heavily leaning on cookies, nuts, candy bars and hot cocoa for portable short term (72 hours) rations. Perhaps we need to expand, but I imagine for the moment it will do the job.

Re: Best MRE?
If you are looking for a week supply, there is no reason to consider price or shelf life. You and your family are not going to starve in a weeks time. Since your investment is small, buy the best and most palatable food that suits your tastes. Eat some of the food to see which dishes/products you like and rotate your stock. If it expires, throw it away and buy new stuff.MikeStone wrote:Forgive me if there is info out there already...couldn't find exactly what I was seeking.
I'm working on my bug out bag and plan to get enough MREs for about a week. (2 adults, 3 kids)
I'm looking for opinions about MRE brands that have good products. Compact, tasty, with a good shelf life, etc. What brands do you like and where is the best place to get them?
Thanks for your help!

I'd have sworn this was a trick question, but since its not, I recall that Chicken ala King was my favorite, since it almost always had a chocolate chip 'cake' in it, and I'd have to trade the jelly for someones Tabasco. Good lord, that chicken ala king needed all the help available!
Long live that Chocolate chip cake though, Long live!!

Would you believe a website and forums DEDICATED to talking about MREs?
Would you believe I've spent HOURS there?

Re: Best MRE?
I used to sleep with the MRE I planned to eat for breakfast. Body heat made them more tolerable than eating them cold.
I have a few MRE packs at home for a grab and go situation but we plan to dig in for a storm, and canned food is a better choice for us in those circumstances. Plus the sacks of rice and beans for long term storage against generally tough times.

Re: Best MRE?
Honestly, I love MREs. Even when we have a perfectly functioning dining facility over here I'll still eat them now and then.
My favorite is by FAR the Maple Sausage. Crush up the sausage and dump in the green salsa packet... mmmmmmmm

Re: Best MRE?
Are you opposed to freeze dried options? They will be lighter and take up far less room in your BoB. Yes, you will need a filter for water to rehydrate the meals, but you already have one of those, right?
