I choose dangerous freedom over the safety of the government dictating to us what's appropriate or not.

Freedom (Liberty) is risky. It is fraught with opportunity for good and for evil. We cannot take away the opportunity for evil without also taking away the opportunity for good. Though it pertains more to stewardship of one's resources, the Latin phrase Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware) is one to always keep in mind when pondering a life of liberty.

ICQ was a little internet chat applet that allowed you to send & receive short messages to people in your contact list. Sort of like text messaging for the PC.pushpullpete wrote:Oh.. what is ICQ ? Even this late in my life I am still somewhat computer illterate.
ICQ is not an acronym. It was just a 3 letter way of saying the program's name, "I seek you".

Last time I used it was probably 15 years ago, but I still remember my ICQ number. 114145590 - Don't ask me how I managed that!bearlesjr wrote:Met my wife of 16 years now almost 20 years ago on ICQ if anyone knows what that is.

Remember? Why are you guys using the past tense? IRC is still active with thousands and thousands of chat rooms. MIRC is probably the most popular IRC software but some browers can do IRC too.ScottDLS wrote:How about IRC? Anybody remember that?

I haven't logged into IRC for 11-12 years. I used to use it at work and also had a combination chat client that had ICQ, AIM, Yahoo!, and others all integrated. I think I quit using them all when I switched to Gmail.VMI77 wrote:Remember? Why are you guys using the past tense? IRC is still active with thousands and thousands of chat rooms. I know Yahoo! still has chat rooms, too, but man, I don't think I've been in one of those since 1999.

Great responses guys!. I use the internet daily! It's a great resource. Now, I'm in the HVAC industry. How is it helpful? Tons of resources online for reference on troubleshooting and installation. I have been in this industry for 40 years now and it has totally changed since I started. New technologies are coming out every day. If I have a problem I just whip out my IPAD or phone and find the solution. Or watch a You Tube video. Couldn't do the 40 years ago.

If you want to build a bomb I'm sure you can find a you tube video on how to do it. Want to convert a semi auto rifle to an auto, just google it . The censoring I was referring to is like being put on the "no fly list", or any sexual or child abuse list restricting you from associated web sites. Much like the PG ratings on a movie or the parental tools set up on most TV's today.
I would be more likely to support actions like this than support banns on ammo and firearms!

I think I understand your point. If someone misuses information, or uses the internet to intimidate, threaten or otherwise cause harm, I can see them losing the privilege to use the internet, maybe for a set period of time, or depending on the offense forever. But I think that is the point of most of the posts, that directly applies to the person, not the internet as a whole. Just like the actions of a few should not cause punishment for everyone.

While I do not profress a college degree in computer science I do have 2 sons who work for Dell. Also, having a military background and worked with computer systems throughout the world my knowledge says differently. I've worked at places overseas in Afghanistan that anything to do with weapons and so on was blocked. If you think for a second that the internet can't be censored your living in a make believe world. The "child block" on TV's and your computer are a form of censorship. Parents censor what their kids can and can't see or watch, well at least the ones who care do.Beiruty wrote:No one can censor the internet, unless you shut down the internet. It was designed to be non-defeated system.Distinguished Rick wrote:Censorship in any form is bad. Period. It would never stop at the internet. Crack the door open and it will lead to more than just censorship.
