NFL thug gets slap on wrist for DUI Manslaughter
Tell me how you can get falling down drunk, get in your car, run over a pedestrian and kill them, plead guilty and get 30 days in jail. How many of you think you could get that sentence? That is what just happened to Donte Stalworth of the Cleveland Browns. This is a shame, the color of justice is green.

Sadly, the color of justice has been green for a very long time.... ![banghead :banghead:](./images/smilies/banghead.gif)

The Miami Herald reported that Stallworth was immediately taken into custody and that after he gets out he will serve two years of house arrest followed by eight years of probation, according to his plea deal. He will also lose his driving privleges for life and have to perform 1,000 hours of community service.
Stallworth had faced four to 15 years in prison before the plea agreement.
Stallworth also reached a confidential financial settlement with the Reyes' family, according to the Herald and the Associated Press.
...... He was returning to Miami Beach about an hour later when he struck Reyes, who was crossing the MacArthur Causeway, which connects Miami and Miami Beach. Reyes was trying to catch a bus and was not in the crosswalk.
I think all of that taken together is a fair deal for a guilty plea when the original sentence would have only been 4 to 15 years, and the guy he hit was J-Walking.
To me, that is the whole story. Do you think you would have been offered that sentence ? Not a chance. Here is more to the story, the link is below.
I agree, I cannot stand when people j-walk but if Stalworth would not have been drunk, he probably would not have hit him. Remember, this was at 7:15am when the accident happened. Think of Michael Vicks sentence, 15 months in prison, house arrest and probation, that is a lot tougher than what Stalworth is facing. It all has to do with the plea deal that was offered. The millions that the guys family received probably had something to do with it as well.

I am somewhat at a loss here.
Fighting Dogs.
Running over folks when drunk.
One of these seems to be a bit more serious than the other, yet there still appears to be a great disparity between the two when it comes to punishment.

Exactly, that is my point. This guy is getting a walk in the park for killing someone while being drunk. This punishment in no way fits the crime.Purplehood wrote:I am somewhat at a loss here.

Michael Vicks was convicted on a Federal rap, conviction of a federal rap usually means someone doesn't personally like the defendant. If he was tried in most state courts, it would be very unlikely he would have served time. Federal prosecutors and judges seem to be pretty selective who to go after and make an example of, but when they do they go for blood and almost always get what they go after.
