DPS Help Wanted

"The DPS is one place that is hiring in the state. Several states have been laying off troopers but Texas is in the process of trying to fill around 300 positions."

I sure hope the Director is pegging some of those openings for the CHL division! :???:

OK, but don't go digging through the pile to find your app and get yours approved faster!

But the real question would be, if you already have your CHL, could you carry at work??

It's a government-owned or leased building, right? :)

But i was referring to the other people on this forum who have advertised they were looking for employment. I currently am employed, so sadly, I cannot take this position.

How much does it pay...?

starts in mid 30's and raises are like every four years. They really arent paid enough, and have had problems of hiring people then having them leave to higher paying departments. I know in the early 2000's when they first started hiring alot, their hiring quality was not good. They were worried about meeting quotas. So hopefully that has changed.

the only drawback is they do a background check as part of the application .
this could take months before you're approved .

I had thought about becoming a LEO several times, I cant make it on what those guys get paid though. I've got too many bills that will never go away in my life time, all they will do is get more expensive... If it wasn't for that, I'd be all over it.... Now if someday I manage to meet a wealth woman and get married, I'll sign up  I dont see neither of those things happening ;-)

LEO's dont get paid enough. I'd be all for them getting a healthy pay raise..

To me the DPS is the premier law enforcement agency in the state. It just don't seem right to be stopped and ticketed by a trooper who just moved from Michigan or some other state. Seems to me there would be enough prospective individuals who already live in the state to fill 300 positions. I know local agencies recruit out of state but come on, this is the Texas DPS we are talking about. Wish I was younger.

Yeah but they lose good locals to higher paying departments. Mesquite PD will start you out at 51k. Most around Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio will start in mid 40's. And by the time your done with academy and FTO you'll be making on average 2 to 5 thousand more within 1 to 1.5 years. You can make decent money, you just gotta work OT like other jobs. I know of officers who have made 75k plus and thats down here in Galveston County. I do that with OT too, not LEO though. So just depends on where you are willing to work and how much. But thats DPS 's biggest problem, they are on average 10k less starting out then most. And then why would you want to go through one of the hardest police academies in the nation for only 35k ish starting salary. The state has a notorious problem of giving raises that only equal to 1 to 2 k more a year. Thats why I dont work for the state anymore, among other reasons.

Good points Y2bad4u - I thought they made more than that. From what you said it seems it would be kinda hard to recruit out of state. That too bad for our troopers but I guess they know going in what the salaries are.
