Checking in at kids' school
This story is to show the importance of showing your "picture ID".
At our kids school we have to check-in each time we need to get into the school building. There's a little system called T-rex that the attendant uses to scan DLs. One day, I was with my wife, just before getting off our car, I disarm and leave my EDC in my car. At the entrance, as usual we say hi to the attendant and she asks us for picture IDs. I hand over the first ID that appears in my wallet from the plastic window (usually it is DL and behind it is my CHL). The lady takes my picture ID and start scanning it with our little T-rex, but for a reason, the system did not work.
The lady says, "Have you been here before?".. I said "sure, I am in your system". She tries again, did not work. She started reading the picture ID and says I do not need that.
I was "Ah...I guess you need this one" ....and I hand over my DL and retrieve my CHL.
We all started giggling about what happened
No cops showed up, no one asked if I was carrying and we went on our away to get into the school.

Re: Checking in at kids' school
Might be a good idea. Might not.
I remember an on-post day care at a military base that required such sign-in. Ironically, there was a handout in the lobby about choosing day cares. One suggestion was to make sure you could see your child within 30 seconds of entering the building, to give abusers little time to conceal what was happening. That was not possible at that facility.
Two edged swords, folks.

Wonder why it wouldn't scan.... aren't they both from the same place? Makes me wanna go in Monday morning and see what happens! Our receptionist knows about my CHL, so she wouldn't mind... but I don't know if she has ever seen one. However, I really don't want the CHL pic on my name tag! ewwww!

My kid's school requires ID, but there is a little lady that checks each one and lets you enter or kicks you out.

Re: Checking in at kids' school
My wife is a teacher at an elem school.
I wonder what their protocol is for stopping someone who should not pass but passes anyway.
I'll have to look in to it as I am curious now.
Physically the hall monitor could not stop some one. And she likely would be the first one to be targeted.
It likely is to stop those who simply have no business there.
But in the event of a MWAG, she is a sitting duck.

Re: Checking in at kids' school
The TRex System pulls up Tx DPS info - puts up an alert for registered offenders - we have turned a few away - it alerts Central office and local PD when they scan in. I so feel for our receptionist she is on the front line so to speak. We have had table top drills and talked through this scenario, and will have live drills. However, it is unfortunately a scarey and realistic idea.
But then I remind myself that schools are gun free zones and we are safe!

Yes, T-rex is to check for registered sex offenders who have no businees picking up kids from school or even get into kids school.

Seems they should be arrested for trying if they had no business at the school.AndyC wrote:A few offenders have come by?? Re: Checking in at kids' school
Had to check my daughter out today for an ortho appointment. As I walked into the school office, I noticed a large, perfectly compliant 30.06 sign in both languages. Talk about redundant!!!!!
