Thinking About Moving to New Mexico

Me and the wife have been thinking about moving to the Angel Fire or Eagle Nest, New Mexico area since we first took a trip there back in 2010. The biggest problem we've had was that there are just not really any jobs up in the mountains around those areas. So now I'm working for a company that has offices all over and if I work hard over the next few years I can probably get a district manager position in the area. My wife is a mechanical engineer, Air Guard officer (engineering), and has an MBA so getting a job for her probably wouldn't be too hard. If nothing else she can "guard mooch" and take an AGR slot or something in the area until she can find a position somewhere.

So anyway I'm scouring the net trying to find a web forum for people who live in the area, and can't find one. We're looking for some folks who can tell us where the good schools are, nice areas to live etc. Anyone on here no of a forum or maybe just have lived there or know the area well?

Our plan right now is to buy something like a decent townhouse, condo, something like that in Northern Santa Fe. Then buy around 10 acres, probably around Eagle Nest, and build a 100 x 80 metal building, frame out part of it to be a house, and maybe even build my own indoor range :biggrinjester: . RIfle range looking at a mountain for the non-snowing seasons. Just head up on the weekends, holidays etc, it's only an hour and a half from Northern Santa Fe.

The gunlaws are pretty good and we love the mountains, the rusticness of the area, and cool/cold weather year round (it's like 72* there in June). Plus if the a problem arises, TEOTWAWKI happens, etc will be in an area of the country with lots of land, lots of fuel for fires in the winter, isolated and up in the moutains.

So anyone able to point me in the right direction as far as a website where I can talk to folks who know the area?

We'll be coming back through that area and Cimmaron Canyon in the next week or so. We'll keep an eye out for bargain property. "rlol"

That would be a beautiful area to move to. It is not Texas, the people think different in many ways and there is a state income tax. We go over there 3 or 4 times a year. There are mountains, trees, and water, all a real asset. I had a place for awhile near Capitan, but it is not quite as culturewise as northern New Mexico. Raton would be a good place to start since there are several realtors there and not that far from where you want to move. I don't know if they have any listings in that area, but, they are long on advise. I have talked to a couple of them and they were very knowledgeable. You could at least get some ideas. Try:

Go to the real estate section of the site and try the different realtor's sites for information.

Yes, their gun laws are OK, but everything else there is pretty liberal. I have a close friend who lives in Santa Fe. She says that it is very frustrating for someone with conservative political and social values to live there. Just something to think about......

Beautiful country though. My ex-wife and I spent our honeymoon backpacking the Gila Wilderness up the West Fork river, out of Silver City.

State Income Tax?

Years ago when I had to file 45 page Federal returns, I thought I'd never move anywhere that had a State Income Tax, I had to use 2 weeks of vacation to do taxes already back then.

Now, it isn't a consideration for me, I sold all that stuff that ate my vacations. my wallet is thinner, but I am more relaxed.

Check out TAOS as well and around the Angel Fire area both share the same mountain area as Red River.

As promised, we just came across northern NM from Shiprock to Angel Fire down to Las Vegas and out Tucumcari. If it was me, I'd be lookin' in the Chama area. Angel Fire, Eagle's Nest, Red River are too touristy to suit me. Taos is a lot too touristy and artsy.

The aspens out of Chama up across the mountains and almost into Taos were blindingly beautiful! Good luck in your search.

I lived in Red River for a couple of years. Beautiful area geographically speaking, but not my favorite culturally.

I will be in Angel Fire at the end of the month for a little hunting. I love it up there and can't wait to spend some time in that crisp mountain air.

Love the state. My brother retired there from Houston so I have a great excuse to visit often.

The frustrating thing about their gun laws are the numerous sovereign nations sprinkled around the state who have their own laws that are rather ill defined. Yes, in general, they correspond to the state and national laws but its not easy to find out what "in general" actually means.

The strange laws would drive you nuts. Some of the laws in NM make you think you are either in Yankee land or the Left Coast. :coolgleamA:
