My sister (yes she carries ) is looking at taking a job in downtown Houston. I have already suggested some nice places to the North (I lived in Spring for a while), but does anyone have some insight on some other nice places to live? And also what places to specifically avoid? She'd be looking at renting an apartment or small condo most likely, and generally likes to live closer to her work rather than 30 minutes away like I do.
When I first moved to town in 2000, I lived in West University, at about Holcomb and Buffalo Speedway. Lots of nice apartments to rent in that area, mostly medical center workers. I could walk to the shops at Rice Village and there was a fair amount going on.
I got old, married and moved to the Suburbs, so now Clear Lake is home. Both are nice, just different
It's hard to say without knowing your sister. Some people like Midtown or neighborhoods in or near the heights inside the city limits of Houston. Some people like West U or Bellaire so they can say they technically don't live in Houston. The villages along Memorial are an option if she makes solid six figures.
I won't suggest Katy or The Woodlands or Friendswood if she wants a short commute.
I live in Clear Lake. It's a solid 45 minutes or more to downtown depending on what time you are mingling with the rush hour traffic. If you leave early enough it's less than 30 minutes. If I were single I'd want to live near town somewhere, preferably close to Midtown, Downtown, West U, or near Memorial or Memorial Park.
Thanks. I'll pass that info along to her. She's more urban friendly than I am. She's about 18 months younger than my 25 years, so I think she probably likes the more 'hip' areas. She has a long commute right now (we rent an apartment together in a suburb of Denver), and I think she wants to move much closer to work.
I'm actually getting pretty tired of suburb life too...I'm just opposite of her though. I will move to the mountains again when I graduate from college (unless I have to take a job in TX again). I'd rather have bugling elk for my neighbors than these dolts in the city with their loud motorcycles, loud stereos, and loud fights outside. I think I'm turning into a cranky old man already. It'll be a cold day in the infernal place when I trade my sports car for a Vespa and buy a loft downtown!

I live in Rice Military, which is just a half-mile east of Memorial Park, and ~3 miles west of downtown. I'd be happy to give her some 'inside the loop' orientation when she gets into town, if she's interested. I love not having a commute! She needs to be careful - places like West U, while officially inside the Loop, are still going to put her into traffic getting in & out of downtown.
I'll quit carrying a gun when they make murder and armed robbery illegal
