Wish List - for a new home

#1

Post by Teamless »

My wife and I are looking into building a new home and with this, we can start with a "wish list"

So, if you were going to build your own house, what are your must haves in your home?
We have thought of a lot, but I am sure we have overlooked some things that would be quite nice and useful.

Thanks

a walk-in shower with a seat and a big shower head! personally I'd skip the tub, but I know alot of people who like to soak.

a custom kitchen with what "I" want in it, not the builder!

a sewing room to die for!!!! big enough to let me set up my huge quilt stand and still let me walk around it

Small conveniences I like. Plug inside broom closet if you use a Dustbuster or cordless vac. Have a plug installed in a bathroom drawer for an area to stash hairdryer/straight iron junk (nix this if the wife leaves things turned on is forgetful though). I put a large cabinet in kitchen that was designed for spices, but use it for first aid and meds(easier if you have little ones). Plug next to toilet (for a bidet/washlet w/ heated seat) if you dont know what one is, google it, purchase one and you will be your wife's hero forever. Attic light, not always a standard option. Prewired security system, better than retrofit. Extra hose spigots. Hidden wall safe. Storm shelter. Lightning protection.

Have a predetermined location of where your kitchen trash can will go (we built 6 yrs ago and wished we would have had a slide-out, hidden can location installed).

And forcefields are pretty cool too...

A simple thing is a linen closet. I've bought two houses and both times I didn't think about it. I've kicked myself both times. I have to store towels and sheets in a bedroom closet to store my linens.

Dream house? Big shower with multiple heads and good water pressure. Walk-in gun safe. Veranda. Land!

Plus the standard wants like sufficient closet space, sufficient power outlets, sufficient sinks & commodes, sufficient cabinets & shelves, etc.

Hidden safes in the walls.

My screen porch is my favorite room. I don't know how I ever lived without one. We had plastic curtains installed so we can use it year round. I'd like to have a larger fireplace out there. We have a pullout drawer for the kitchen trash, real stairs to the attic for easy access to storage, electric plug next to toilet for nightlight. We have a sitting room adjoining the master bedroom that we never use. It would have made a great safe room. My wife says, in hind-sight she would have a wall mounted oven instead of under the range. Something closer to eye level.

Double ovens (especially for holidays) and a huge walkin pantry with room for an extra fridge. I have both of those right now and am extremely spoiled.
