not overdue, should not be happening period. jackanapes is NOT an enemy combatant nor were they assigned to a unit that was in a combat zone, this violates the rules and cheapens the sacrifice others have made

This is a valid point, but when the government tries to make up for stupidity like callng a terrorist act workplace violence the continued stupidity is ridiculous.
That said, I for one consider the perp in fact an enemy combatant. He is the enemy of all hat is good. He is pure evil.

I'm not going to argue either way about them receiving a purple heart, but they SHOULD be given the benefits to take care of medical bills, PTSD, etc.. whether they were in a "combat zone" or not. They already don't get paid enough, but to add thousands of dollars out of pocket to pay for medical bills that occurred on duty isn't right.

I had a corporal in Viet Nam who was shot a second time by an ARVN. We gave him a purple heart for that one.
I think the Ft Hood soldiers deserve some sort of recognition, and this is in keeping with George Washington's intent:
"The General ever desirous to cherish virtuous ambition in his soldiers, as well as to foster and encourage every species of Military merit directs whenever any singularly meritorious action is performed, the author of it shall be permitted to wear on his facings, over his left breast, the figure of a heart in purple cloth or silk edged with narrow lace or binding."

My take may be a little outside the norm. It was not a combat zone, until the shooter stood on a table, pulled out a weapon, pointed that weapon at a victim who was chosen as such because they were in the U.S. Military, and then fired that weapon at his first victim. At this point they were ATTACKED on our own soil, not by an enemy combatant but by a treasonous snake in the grass who was acting in the interest of our enemies. This does deserve a medal and benefits, maybe not a purple heart, but something new and equivalent dedicated to those who are attacked in the interest of our enemies where they should have been safe. These people were not victims of work place violence, they were victims of a jihadist attack because they were military soldiers.
