I have yet to hear what their grievances are.

Re: Anti-Trump Protestors Marching In The Streets
I saw a very interesting young man being interviewed on CNN. He was wearing a T-shirt that said something about his girlfriend dumping him. His main grievance seemed to be that HRH may win the popular vote and lose the electoral college. I guess he thinks the system is "rigged".
The funniest part was when he told the African American interviewer that their vote would have only counted for 1/3 of a white person's vote back when the constitution was signed. He had the 1/3 part right, but totally missed the context. Maybe he was too emotionally triggered by his breakup to go to class the next day when they explained what the 1/3 actually related to.

This is a direct result of the "dumbing down" of our entire educational system and the change in what is taught in government and history classes. More time is devoted to teaching the history of the gay rights movement that is spent on understanding what was written into the Constitution, why there is a Bill of Rights, and what compromises had to be made in order to achieve ratification.

I think that our government has evolved so that states have less power and significance compared to the federal government. This is not a good thing, IMHO. But it does help to explain why people believe that we should just go to a straight popular vote as opposed to the electoral college. The great compromise and the need for small states to have influence on the federal government is something that most people just can no longer comprehend.
Get rid of the electoral college, then apportion senators strictly based on population (sorry Alaska and others, but you might get zero senators). State governments will eventually be as influential as your local utility district.

Or repeal the 17th amendment and give the states back their say in the federal government...

Absolutely! Why is it that the government of Costa Rica has an official delegation in Washington DC, but the State of Texas doesn't? Because the Senators are now 'popular vote' rather than appointed by the state.RogueUSMC wrote:Or repeal the 17th amendment and give the states back their say in the federal government...
Once we repeal the 17th, then we need to reinforce the 10th, which has fallen by the wayside far too often.

Politics are confusing and I can see why they get confused when it comes to certain portions of it. I too, in a recent thread asked why the popular vote doesnt count and TAM took the time to spell it out for me which I appreciate him doing so. I also saw that as something I need to study for my own good so thats what I'm doing when I can.
On Fox, they were showing a College that shut down classes so the students could adjust to the outcome of the election. The classes were teaching law. How crazy is it to see the law classes shut down for the day? They are there learning the law. As potential future attorneys/judges, they need to get used to not getting their way. Too many hurt feelings these days.

Their grievance is democracy. They don't like it. Although they insist that their nemesis accept the election results, they're not prepared to do so themselves. Just stop feeding them, and eventually they'll either go home and get a job, or they'll die. Either way is fine with me.Abraham wrote:I have yet to hear what their grievances are.

Re: Anti-Trump Protestors Marching In The Streets
Help me out - what is the 1/3 thing you're talking about? As I recall, the Constitution originally assigned slaves a value of 3/5 of a person for representation purposes, but slaves had no voting rights at all (nor did women at the time).Soccerdad1995 wrote:I saw a very interesting young man being interviewed on CNN. I believe any non-slave African American male citizens would have had full voting rights, so even in that context I'm not sure what the 1/3 is referring to.

Re: Anti-Trump Protestors Marching In The Streets
I assumed that he was mistaking the counting of votes for the population count for representation purposes, but you are correct that this was 3/5 and not 1/3. So on second thought, I have no idea what the guy was talking about. Interestingly enough, the CNN reporter did not challenge his statement that Black votes used to be counted as 1/3 of a White vote.Scott Farkus wrote:Help me out - what is the 1/3 thing you're talking about? At one time if you didn't own property you couldn't vote, the reason being you had no vested interest in the system!

Re: Anti-Trump Protestors Marching In The Streets
Their grievances might take many different forms, but in the end come down to an inability to accept the validity of the recent election results. The same people who were aghast that Trump (a candidate) might ever challenge the results of an election and the same who protested his candidacy with signs reading "Love Trumps Hate" now ironically find themselves challenging the election results and in some cases resorting to criminal and violent acts to punctuate their stance. The political class left has created a dependent class of followers who behave as toddlers throwing tantrums when they don't get their way. They are completely dismayed that the apparatus which has nursed them, taking the form of HRC in this election cycle, has been denied any power to keep the teat available and the milk flowing. Too few understand cause and effect these days since they haven't ever had to deal with natural consequences.

Well, how could a no-nothing CNN reporter challenge a statement being factual or not? It's so easy to be a reporter at CNN, just agree and treat as truth anything said by a liberal/progressive/Democrat/socialist and treat everything else as racist/sexist/whatever-ist.Soccerdad1995 wrote:Interestingly enough, the CNN reporter did not challenge his statement that Black votes used to be counted as 1/3 of a White vote.
