I have a paid legal service. Once I get more fiscally comfortable, I will probably look to retain a lawyer in general though.

Just my opinion, but I believe that the only people that really benefit from these programs are those that sell them. I have talked to a few of these people and they don't want to talk about how much they make off the sale. or how much the of premiums actually are paid towards benefits.

We have several lawyers on this forum and I've never seen any enthusiasm from them for these programs. An emergency savings account is a wiser use of your money IMHO.

The "Do you really need it?" question about anything is always easy to answer. My usual answer is NO. We each must do our own risk analysis.

I need to breathe.

I do not "need" to:
* Have a fire extinguisher in my kitchen
* Have collision insurance for my vehicles
* Have home owner's insurance
* Have liability insurance for my rocketry activities
* Carry a self-defense handgun

However, I find it prudent to do so. I hope I will never have to use any of these things. I plan my life and activities so that I will never "need" any of these things. But I have them because it makes my life better.

As with most things in life, it comes down to which risks we are willing to manage and which benefits matter most.

I think the financial experts recommend minimum 3 to 6-month income.

How much is enough? More than I can save.

I have prepaid coverage for myself, my wife, and my minor children. Works for me. May work for you or it may not. There are few absolutes in this life.

I have Tricare medical coverage and I have a medical savings account. I have accident/collision coverage on my vehicles and savings to cover deductibles.

For me and mine, right now, under current law, a combination of insurance and savings works best. Your mileage will vary, but you should make an informed decision and have a plan.

I picked it up this year based on the current fragile political situation locally.

I would also suggest you look at what Charles Cotton has posted on these services, he has given good advice which should be considered before making a decision. I would suggest paying special attention to what he said about reading the contract on what they actually provide and when they provide it.

That is my personal decision. I also do not carry a general liability policy, either. But I do have liability coverage as part of my home owners policy and auto insurance policy. That is where I, personally, draw the line.

Anyone use [Pre-paid legal service]?

(Moderator note: the Forum allows no named mention of such services at this time. One prominent service is the subject of an ongoing class-action lawsuit and, given the nature of this Forum, we cannot allow by-name cites or testimonials, whether positive or negative.)
